Ninety years ago America entered the First World War on the side of England, France and Russia. By that time the Germans were defeating the Russians. Within one year the Bolsheviks, newly arrived to power, pulled Russia out of the war. Many Americans were opposed to entering the war. They saw no clear benefit to participating in the conflict. But the Republicans were gung-ho, looking to turn America into an acknowledged great power. Their expectations were fulfilled. But the argument between Woodrow Wilson and Henry Cabot Lodge almost wrecked the victory.
