The Spanish Civil War was a conflict with extreme passion on both sides. Had the Loyalists defeated the Franco Rebels the Second World War might have been avoided. European Fascism tested its will and its weapons in Spain and tasted success. The defeat of the Loyalists was not only due to Fascist might. It was also due to the bloody disputes on the Left between the Socialists and Liberals, Communists and Anarchists. Many American and European volunteers were caught up in the struggle.
