Dwight D. Eisenhower won th Republican party's nomination for president on the first ballot, gathering 845 convention votes and defeating his chief opponent, Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. Richard M. Nixon, 39 year-old senator from California was selected as Eisenhower's running mate. Earlier in the convention, held in Chicago between July 7 and 12, 1952, General Douglas MacArther delivered a stirring keynote address with warnings about America's Korean foreign policy.
With a record turnout of voters, the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket would win a landslide victory in November, defeating the Democratic ticket of Adlai Stevenson and John Sparkman. It would be the first of two terms for the Eisenhowewr administration, ending in November, 1960, with the election of John F. Kennedy.
