With this collection we present essays from Emerson's mid-career, an era where he had just finished a long trip to Europe and was settling into a career as a lecturer and public figure. Many of the essays here grew out of his lectures and thus they capture in large part a writer at the height of his intellect.
Born in 1811, Emerson is renowned as a seminal American author, poet, and philosopher. A lifelong lover of nature, he is one of the founders of the transcendentalist movement. In his time he was quite active as a lecturer and was a contemporary of Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau among others.
