Early in Muslim history, a question arose. Should non-Arab converts enjoy the same privileges as the Arab founders? The theoretical answer was Yes. But the pragmatic answer was No. The center of non-Arab discontent was Iraq, the home of Chaldean Christians, many of whom converted to Islam. Their champion was Ali, the son-in-law of Moham- med, who became caliph for a while. Ultimately, he and his son Hussein were killed. But their cause remained. The followers of Ali were called Shiat-Ali (hence Shiites). Over the centuries the battle between the Sunni and Shiites raged. In the 16th century persia was taken by the Shiites. By then the Shiites had split into many opposing factions.
