Description
With the arrival of Western powers in the Muslim world, with their secular culture, confrontation was inevitable. The Muslim clergy universally rejected secularism. But many Muslims with Western education wanted to secularize Muslim culture in the same way the Christians in the Christian world had secularized Christian culture. The most dramatic examples of these Muslim secularists were Kemal Ataturk of Turkey and reza pahlavi of Iran. Later Gamal Nasser of Egypt emerged. Many of the reformers were military men who sought to undo Muslim humiliation by acquiring the secrets to Western power. Their campaign was the provocation that triggered organized fundamentalism.
