In the persian world a variation on Sunni Islam emerged. It was embraced enthusiastically by the persians, but even more so by the Turks who conquered them and who converted to Islam. The variation was mysticism, an attempt to make direct contact with God, bypassing the Quran and the Sunna. The Sufi orders that emerged featured ecstatic ‘gurus” who sang and danced their way into a mystic union with Allah. The orthodox Sunni were appalled. But thousands of Muslims found the Sufi mystics more comforting than the Sunni scholars. The Sufi teachers were more open and liberal then the orthodox clergy, producing a benign alternative to the old fanaticism.
