United Nations Conference Opening
April 25, 1945

The first meeting of the United Nations Conference on International Organization was held at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. Members from 47 nations attended the solemn event. President Roosevelt had died only a few days earlier and President Truman, newly assuming the role of Commander-in-Chief addressed the conference by telephone, urging the members to “rise above personal interests” and create a world body which would enforce justice and make another world war impossible.
