2008-08-24 Travelling Texas
Author: ABC Radio National Sun, Aug 24, 2008
`Two cowboys team up somewhere in west Texas to make some easy money. The philosopher cowboy is a drifter with a soft spot for French theory. His partner is a West Texas band leader with his own radio show in the days before global media. The philosopher learns only one half of the story; the band leader knows the other. Now they must work together.´
Audio artist Sherre Delys takes us to the old west for a series of wide landscape shots interleaved with extreme close-ups of cigar-chewing bad men and grinning Texas Playboys. There´s a Mexican hat dance, Western Swing, Hillbilly and Tex-Mex songs play, revolvers are drawn and we´re aboard the Orange Blossom Special - bound for cowboy country.

Plus as a special on line only podcast we're starting our Collide-o-scope section where we feature collages from pool.org.au
This week it's Tapping with Richard Nixon by Michelle Watts who is also known as Spilt_Milk. You can download it here: http://pool.org.au/audio/spilt_milk/10_minutes_of_tapping_with_richard_nixon
More details of the Collide-o-scope project:
If you'd like to make something for the radio but journalism and song-writing aren't your thing, you might enjoy mashing up some words and sounds to tell a new story.
Build a conversation out of two separate interviews.
Use sounds instead of some of the words in a sentence.
Tell half a story and the listener's imagination will tell the rest.
Share your word-and-sound collage in Pool via the audio upload page here:
http://www.pool.org.au/node/add/audio
When you do, mark it with the tag `collide-o-scope´ so everyone can find it.
If you're not a member of Pool you´ll need to register here:

ABC Radio National's The Night Air will feature the most creative contribution each week in its podcast
We are most interested in experimental forms that combine entertaining listening with oblique ideas. The Night Air is a place to come at ideas sideways rather than straight ahead. This isn´t the place for your latest beat track with voice samples. They'd be better over at Unearthed:

If you want to use other people's words and sounds in your collage make sure that the creators have allowed this re-use. One way to ensure this is to choose material licensed by Creative Commons, under a 'non-commercial, by attribution' licence.
You can find this kind of audio material in Pool by searching here: http://www.pool.org.au/search
Choose Creative Commons BY or BY NC in the licence selector.
More information about Creative Commons here: http://www.pool.org.au/help/faqs#rightlicence

2008-08-03 Coffee Break
Author: ABC Radio National Sun, Aug 03, 2008
Time for a cuppa!
In your daily coffee cup there are stories: about people, the environment, liberation struggles, friendship and art. Coffee has helped mostly city dwellers create outdoor cultures and social rituals, negotiate work relationships and come up with new ideas.
Yet the story of coffee is also about relationships between rich and poor. In the home of coffee, Ethiopia, coffee farmers rarely get a fair price for their beans—a fact of life for most coffee producing countries.
Tonight, with producer Nadyat El Gawley we travel through time to Sydney´s earliest coffee houses and Melbourne´s contemporary coffee culture. We visit Australian brigadistas picking coffee beans in Nicaragua over 20 years ago, question advertising, and dive into caffeine obsession.
And after your latte, cappuccino and macchiato—shake your body to a rich Night Air blend of caffeinated music from across the coffee-growing and coffee-quaffing world.
