In this lecture series, art historian Gary Schwartz surveys the life, time and work of Rembrandt van Rijn. He reflects on both the 17th century historical context in which Rembrandt emerged as an artist, as well as on his superb techniques. Schwartz presents the listener with a unique re-introduction to the artist’s biography in which he gives a vivid description of Rembrandt’s life and his rich and varied drawings, etchings and paintings, such as the Nightwatch.

Rembrandt Review . . ., August 25, 2007

I'm a professional artist and Rembrandt has been a major influence for me since I was a child. I don't want to insult the author because he certainly has a great deal of information but sometimes I felt like dozing off. I don't know how you can make such an interesting life so school room text book---there just wasn't much creative passion in this biography.
As for Rembrandt's technique, the specific understanding of chiaroscuro is so amazing but the passion of it is somehow missed here. It was kind of like listening to someone read excerpts from a coffee table book at Starbucks.
So, for me, this bio provided a surface understanding of most every aspect of this great painter. If you get it, think of it as a college lecture. It's good if you look at it with that mindset. Good basic info. Nice professor. Sumatra venti please.
