Home Run Heroes

Home Run Heroes

Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Hank Aaron, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire

by John Bergez

Not only baseball fans will love this book. So will anyone who's ever wondered why baseball fans love to stand up and scream, "It's out'a here!"

Explaining why hitting a home run is the hardest challenge in sports, the book tells about five all-time home run hitters, beginning with their early lives.

"I was a bum when I was a kid," "Babe" (George Herman) Ruth admitted, but Babe went on to establish two formidable home run records: 60 homers in the Yankees' 1927 season and a lifetime total of 714 homers.

To many baseball fans, Babe's records were sacred, so fans were hard on Yankee Roger Maris when he bettered Babe's season record with 61 homers in 1961. Racist fans were even harder on the Braves' great Henry "Hammering Hank" Aaron when he broke Babe's lifetime record in 1974.

In 1998, Cardinal "Big Mac" Mark McGwire and Cub "Slamming Sammy" Sosa staged the greatest home run derby ever. Both men smashed Maris's longstanding record. But just as impressive as the numbers were the mutual respect and admiration that they both displayed throughout the race.
