Explorer, inventor, soldier, poet, archaeologist and diplomat, Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was the most remarkably versatile man of his age. The explorer in Central Africa who discovered Lake Tanganyika also translated The Arabian Nights, made a dangerous pilgrimage to Mecca in disguise, and produced major writings on reptiles, religion, mining and mountain climbing, slavery, and strange sexual practices.
