Agent 146

Agent 146

by Erich Gimpel

Here is the spellbinding autobiography of Erich Gimpel, one of the only Nazi spies to reach American soil. Assigned by the Führer himself, his mission was to sabotage America’s atomic program.

A gripping, well-told, well read story of espionage and love. The listener is transported to World War II Peru, Europe, and finally the United States. Written by Gimpel, a Nazi spy, I am sure the book is biased to show his humanity, but you can't help but sympathize with him as he is hunted down by the FBI in New York City.

This book also offers a view inside a U-boat as Gimpel and his accomplice transit the Atlantic. It took them 5 weeks, as I remember. Their entrance into the bay where Gimpel went ashore is breath-holding.

The romantic side of the book is compelling and lovely, but may not be true, as I understand the existence of the young woman, "Joan," has never been authenticated by a third party. Great listening!

Of particular interest in light of current events is Gimpel's capture, interrogation, and trial, where he was treated fairly and with respect by U.S. officials. None of the torture practices advocated by the current administration were used. I was proud to be an American as I listened to Gimpel's admiration for the competence, thoroughness, and fairness of our system.

My one warning is that the introduction that you hear when you first start the CD is NOT representative of the book as a whole. I almost stopped listening, as the introduction was quite technical. Luckily, I kept listening, and became swept away by this fascinating story.
