Henry VIII (r. 1509-1547), one of his biographers wrote, “changed the heart, mind, and face of Britain more than anything between the coming of the Normans and the coming of the factory,” not least by giving Protestantism its powerful purchase in the English-speaking world.
And given Britain’s later significance in world history—made possible in part by Henry himself—he must be accounted a towering figure of history.
Henry VIII ruled an island kingdom about the size of Pennsylvania inhabited by fewer than 3 million people nearly 500 years ago. This course examines this volcanic man, his turbulent reign, and the influence and limits of personality in shaping history.

The Age of Henry VIII as outlined in a lecture course by Professor Dale Hoak, described the life of one of England’s most well known Kings. King Henry VIII reigned during the time when Britain was going through many changes and growing pains. It was during King Henry VIII’s reign that the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church were split apart. He was also responsible for dissolving the monasteries and creating an Act to unite England and Wales as discussed in this course.
The course given by Hoak highlights the most notable information about King Henry VIII, and how he sought to get rid of his six wives in order to produce a male heir. This is especially spoken of to great lengths in regards to Anne Boelyn and “The Great Matter” Dale Hoak also spoke at length about the Parliamentary Act of Appeals.
Through thorough research and review of the historic texts, the interesting and outlandish life of King Henry VIII was told in a fascinating way in regards to his quiet ascension to the throne, and subsequent monarchy. The description of his excommunication, and his persecution of his advisors, wives, and anyone else who dared disagree with him is mentioned as well. The “Age of Henry VIII” is available both on DVD and Audio CD. It also available on tape as well. The playing time for the audio was approximately eleven to twelve hours.
