Augustine

Augustine

Philosopher and Saint

by Phillip Cary

Long before he was declared a saint by the Church, Augustine (354–430 A.D.) gained profound influence as both a Church Father and a Christian Platonist philosopher—defending the doctrine of the Trinity, defining the epochal idea of religious grace, delving into the inner relationship between God and soul, and much more.

Today Augustine is recognizable even to non-Christians as the most important Christian writer outside of the Bible. Yet Augustine was also a man—a rhetorician trained in the Roman way whose life and discovery of his calling make for one of the most fascinating stories in the history of religious philosophy.

This course paints a rich and detailed portrait of the life, works, and ideas of this remarkable figure whose own search for God has profoundly shaped all of Western Christianity.

The life of St. Augustine was relived in this Teaching Company course entitled “Augustine: Philosopher and Saint” by Professor Philip Cary from Eastern University. The audio course took me through the early life of Augustine as the Early Father of the Roman Catholic Church. Cary’s beginning lectures focused on the major roles played by Augustine and how instrumental he became in promoting many of the idea prevalent in the church today.

Professor Cary continued the theme of showing how much Augustine has contributed to modern thought as he presented his analysis of many of the ideas that were common back then. For example, this was revealed in his lectures on “Faith, Love, and Grace”.

The last few lectures within this course were more designed and better suited for people interested in philosophy and philosophical debates. This was especially apparent on his lecture on “Free Will” and “Sin”, and if we can avoid sinning or if it is predetermined from the beginning. Thus said, the most interesting lecture was Cary’s presentation on the “Inner Self” and “The Trinity”, and how God exists in three parts. It was interesting to see how St. Augustine was responsible for many of the theological doctrines being preached today. The course was available on audiocassette for a total listening time of six to seven hours.
