The Apostle Paul

The Apostle Paul

by Luke Timothy Johnson

Paul is one of the most important, most controversial, and least understood figures in earliest Christianity. This course addresses many questions concerning his embattled life and work.

  • Is Paul the inventor of Christianity or part of a larger movement?
  • Is he best understood from the Acts of the Apostles or from his letters?
  • Why does he focus on moral character of the community?
  • How do his supporters and detractors depict him?

You consider his letters to the Thessalonians, Corinthians, and Galatians. You explore his religious commitments as a member of the Pharisaic movement, his persecution of the Christian sect, the experience that changed him into an apostle, and his work as a missionary and church founder.

The Apostle Paul has been one of the most controversial Christians during his time and even today. The course by Professor Luke Johnson at Emory University discussed Paul’s role in the Early Church. The main theme is that Paul started off as a Pharisee whose main goal was to find early believers in Jesus Christ and kill them.

This short course dealt with Paul’s conversion to the very same belief system of Christianity that he had originally persecuted other people for. The lectures also described how Paul went on to spread the news of Jesus Christ informing people about God’s love.

Professor Johnson really presents numerous hard questions to consider such as how a man who in the beginning largely persecuted the early Christians later converts himself. These lectures describe in detail Paul’s conversion after he encounters Jesus who had already ascended into heaven. Some of these questions went unanswered in this course and provided ‘food for thought’.

It is also quite noteworthy that Professor Johnson described how that after the original persecution and eventual conversion, his name was changed to Paul from Saul, and that Paul went on to become author of many books in the New Testament of the Bible, as well as going out to preach about him. The course was six hours long and available on video or cassette.
