Professor Donald talked about his writings and his career and responded to audience telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. He has written almost twenty books, most of them about the Civil War era. His book Lincoln (1995) was on the New York Times bestseller list for fourteen weeks and won numerous awards. He was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize in biography, for Charles Sumner and the Coming of the Civil War (1960) and Look Homeward: A Life of Thomas Wolfe (1987). Mr. Donald was the principal historical adviser and commentator for the 1992 documentary series Lincoln and for the 2000 television series A House Divided: Abraham and Mary Lincoln.
