My Life: Volume II

My Life: Volume II

by Bill Clinton

President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts to serving the public.

It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House.

President Clinton's audiobook is also the most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works.

It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right and how he survived and prevailed.

It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:

  • The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 campaign
  • The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole
  • The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency

Here is the life of a great national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own signature style.

General Content: “My Life” demonstrated to me why I love audiobooks so much. With a busy schedule, reading the 1,000+ page memoir of Bill Clinton would have been very daunting. With the audio version I was able to complete the unabridged version in a couple of months simply by listening to it in the car and around the house. I’m very thankful that I did as this is quite an amazing story told by quite an amazing man.

The book contains a very detailed account of the events of the life of the man born William Jefferson Clinton. While others may have found the granularity overwhelming, I actually found it fascinating. That Clinton was able to remember (or at least piece together with the help of others) his life to that extent was quite remarkable. And some of the details which might have been left out a shorter version of the book are some of the most memorable parts of the book.

Some of my favorite parts of the book include Clinton’s rise to governor at a young age, his come from behind victory in the 1992 Presidential election, his peace talks with leaders in Ireland, the Middle East and other regions of the world and sadly, his epic battles with conservative Republicans over Whitewater and the Lewinsky scandal.

I truly feel that Bill Clinton will be remembered 100 years from now as one of America’s greatest Presidents. He presided over our country during a period of unequaled peace and prosperity and helped usher the country confidently into the 21st century. Right now, the memories of some of more troublesome moments linger too strongly in many Americans minds but as they fade I’m confident that Clinton will be seen in an increasingly favorable light.

Audio-Specific Content: I listened to the unabridged (34 cassettes, approximately 50 hours) version of this book. It was read by Michael Beck who did a phenomenal job of narration. He sounds a like lot Clinton but actually has a better voice which makes this book very listenable. Overall, this was first-rate production of an incredible book.
