Starting with the period from the late Bronze Age, c. 1500 B.C.E., these lectures proceed chronologically and concentrate on the 200-year interval from 600 to 400 B.C.E., tracing the history of Classical Greece and its foundational influence on all of Western civilization.
This course introduces the world of classical Athens and Greek culture. In areas such as religion and gender, the Greeks seem alien, approaching the world in ways utterly different from ours. In politics and war, the culture seems very familiar. This course examines each of these aspects of Greek culture in an attempt to better understand how it developed as it did and why it still resonates for us today.

The course “Ancient Greek Civilization” is taught by Professor Jeremy McInerney from University of Pennsylvania. I had the pleasure of also listening to a previous lector of his that he did on “Alexander the Great”.
The main theme of the course and the lectures that he presents are on how much the Greek civilization has influenced the modern world, as we now know it. This was seen in the lectures that he presented on Minoa. He continued the course by describing in detail Mycenae and eventually his lectures got onto the subject of the Spartans.
Notably the Persian Wars, which occurred around 500 BC, was my favorite part of the course. The course showed how the Greek’s capture and destruction of the city of Sardis led to the beginning of the wars that continued for some time.
As in “Alexander the Great”, Professor McInerney went into great detail about Alexander’s travels and battles. McInerney illustrated how the culture matured and grew to eventually dominate many other societies such as Syria.
Anyone who is interested in the influence of Greece on our culture will enjoy this course on “Ancient Greek Civilization”.
The course was available on audio CD for a total time of approximately eleven to twelve hours.
