Jimmy Carter, former Governor of Georgia was the first man from the deep South to be elected President in over a century and a quarter. He defeated Gerald Ford, the first President appointed to the position and the first incumbent to lose a Presidential election since Herbert Hoover in 1932. On February 8, 1977 he gave his first official Presidential Press Conference.
