If

If

by Rudyard Kipling

In our continuing effort to provide you with the most inspiring and exceptional self development literature available, LearnOutLoud.com and Zaadz.com present If by Rudyard Kipling. This recorded poem is read by Brian Johnson, Philosopher and CEO of Zaadz, Inc. We hope you enjoy listening to this classic work from Kipling. Be sure to browse the other poems Johnson has recorded in this series.

From Wikipedia.com:
According to Kipling in his autobiography "Something Of Myself", the poem was inspired by Dr Leander Starr Jameson, who in 1895 led a raid by British forces against the Boers in South Africa, subsequently called the Jameson Raid. This defeat increased the tensions that ultimately led to the Boer War. The British press, however, portrayed Jameson as a hero in the middle of the disaster, and the actual defeat as a British victory.

"IF" - a poem to leave by, January 22, 2008

Since my youth "IF" has been an inspiration and guide to me. It begins with profound pragmatic advice and does not let up, but weaves even deeper into the principles of living wisely in a complex world. The poem delineates the teachings of Christ and merits repeated readings when living becomes difficult.

"...you'll be a man, my son", February 17, 2006

'If' was written by British poet Rudyard Kipling in 1895 and published in 1910. Published here as an audio title by LearnOutLoud and narrated by Brian Johnson, philosopher and CEO of Zaadz,Inc., it is a three-minute long rendition of Rudyard Kipling's famous poem. The poem evokes the theme of British stoicism and is also seen as an inspirational work which delineates the virtues that make a 'true' man. The following lines are a good example:
“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
…..Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!"

It is certainly an inspiring poem for me, notwithstanding its overt gender bias. However, listening to this poem was not a good experience for me- of Brian Johnson's inept narration spoiled the charm. He speaks in a monotone, and falters at places, spoiling the flow and feel of the poem. Still, I would recommend everybody interested in literature and self-development to listen to this audio title because of the content, even if during a hurried coffee break.
