20th-Century American Fiction

20th-Century American Fiction

by Arnold Weinstein

This course offers an in-depth look at 11 carefully selected figures: Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, Sherwood Anderson, Flannery O’Connor, William S. Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Coover, Toni Morrison, and Don DeLillo. Like no one else in history, Americans grow up believing—whether realistically or not—that they are masters of a destiny without constraint. How did this national ethos unleash a body of fiction dramatically different from anything that came before? This course sheds light not only on the sheer magnificence of these writers’ literary achievements but explores their uniquely American character as well. Despite their remarkable variety, each represents a body of work that could only have emerged in the United States.

Write a Review of 20th-Century American Fiction

The Twentieth Century has produced talented writers such as Zora Hurston, Toni Morrison, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway. Arnold Weinstein of Brown University provided an in depth look at these great writers in this Teaching Company course.

This course highlighted the work of Sherwood Anderson, whom I had not heard of before, but really enjoyed the lecture on “Winesburg, Ohio”. Three lectures were dedicated to Hemingway, and rightly so. The first lecture chronicled the life of the writer and provided insight into the times in which Hemingway lived in.Interestingly enough, Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse 5 – Apocalypse Now” is also included in this course. For anyone who has experienced the pleasure (or the pain) of reading this novel, they will enjoy Weinstein’s ‘take’ on it.

Two other lectures in the audio course that I found interesting were Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and Tony Morrison’s “Sula”. I have always been a fan of African-American literature, and was quite impressed by their analysis during this course. What was most apparent was Hurston’s roost in Folklore.

The lectures were available on audio and video cassettes with the audio cassettes having a total playing time of fifteen to sixteen hours.
