In Melville's classic short novel Bartleby, a clerk in a law firm, suddenly starts answering all requests with "I would prefer not to." Mayhem naturally results. Scholars have interpreted Bartleby's story as being everything from a tale of mental illness to an allegory for the post-industrial age. It's interesting to note that the original bore the subtitle "A Story of Wall-street." Now there's a new, modernized film version starring Crispin Glover as the inscrutable Bartleby.
