On the surface, this is the story of slavery and mutiny on the high seas, but beneath the adventure-charged plot lies the author’s examination of the subject that so fascinated him: the confrontation of extreme forces of good and evil in the universe. The irony of the tale is that kindhearted Captain Delano is able to rescue the victimized Benito Cereno only because he is too naive to comprehend the horror and depravity into which he wanders.
