Children of the Frost is a collection of stories about the Indians of the frozen Northland with whom London was familiar from his Gold Rush travels. The book drew immediate praise. Its immense popularity was not expected because London described Indians as noble people—not savages—a treatment which was unorthodox for the period. As with his other books, these stories are sometimes brutal, and always exciting and evocative.
