Description
FREE DOWNLOAD: This edited version of Mark Twain's The War Prayer was first performed in 1967, during the Viet Nam War, as a regular part of Richard Henzel's Mark Twain In Person stage show. Mark Twain wrote this short story/poem during the US war on the Philippines and submitted it for publication in 1905, but Harper's Bazaar rejected it as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine." Eight days later, Twain wrote to his friend (and Boy Scouts founder) Dan Beard, to whom he had read the story, "I don't think the prayer will be published in my time. None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth." As he had an exclusive contract with Harper & Brothers, Mark Twain could not publish "The War Prayer" elsewhere and it remained unpublished until 1923, thirteen years after the author's death.
