The Judges is a gripping suspense story, a literary thriller with powerful philosophical, religious and moral themes. When a plane going from New York to Tel Aviv crash lands at a small airport because of a storm, five of the survivors are given shelter in a nearby home. Claudia, a divorced theater manager; Razziel, a yeshiva teacher, once a political prisoner; Yoav, a terminally ill Israeli soldier; George, hiding a Holocaust secret that could ruin a political figure; and Bruce, a would-be priest turned philanderer. Once settled, their host, an enigmatic and disquieting man, begins to interrogate them. He announces that he is their judge, and they must reveal their lives to him. When his guests express outrage, he makes clear that this is no game, that one of them will receive a death sentence. The menacing judge forces each of the survivors to face the truth of their lives -- their innocence, their guilt, their responsibilities. Who should live and who should die? Whose claim on life is greatest?
