When Nicholas's father dies, his Uncle Ralph refuses to help, leaving the young man, his mother, and sister penniless, and Nicholas forced to make his way in the world. From school usher - where he sees the master's brutality to a poor, half-witted boy named Smike - to theatrical company member, Nicholas finally secures a post at the counting house of the Cheeryble Brothers. His sister, Kate, however, is much beset with troubles when her uncle encourages his friend Sir Mulberry Hawk to take indelicate advantage of her. Ralph is foiled in his attempt to ruin Nicholas and his family, and finding that Smike was his son, commits suicide. Cruel poverty, indifferent wealth, and naive pluck make Nicholas Nickleby one of the truly great tales of English literature.
