The "mutual friend" of this novel's title is John Harmon, a friend of Mr. Boffin and the Wilfers, who inherits a fortune on one condition: that he marry Bella Wilfer. He has never met the girl, has not been home in 14 years, and, in fact, is reported to have been murdered. This is not the case, however, and Harmon does return under the assumed name of John Rokesmith, secretary to Mr. Boffin, who is to inherit the money if Harmon does not return and fulfill his nuptial duties. This book, one of Dickens's finest in terms of characterization, features the spirited Bella Wilfer, the insolent barrister Eugene Wrayburn, and the amiable Boffin.
