This novel is usually considered Maupassant’s best, revealing his masterly descriptive skills, his emotional depth, and his light, ironical touch with dialogue and characters. Pierre and Jean are the sons of a retired Parisian jeweler, and their story is a piercing study of jealousy and suspicion. Pierre is a doctor, whose temperament is somewhat nervous and unsteady. Jean, the younger, has a placid nature and is a lawyer. Both love the same woman. When Jean inherits a fortune from an old family friend, Pierre is suspicious of his mother’s one-time sin of adultery.
