Silas Marner, a gentle linen weaver, is falsely accused of a heinous theft committed by his best friend. He exiles himself to the village of Raveloe where he works hard to accumulate a goodly sum of gold. However, Marner’s gold is stolen by one of the sons of Squire Cass, “the greatest man in Raveloe.” The other son has fathered a child with his secret marriage to Molly Farren, an opium addict. Their little girl, Eppie, toddles away from her dying mother to Marner’s doorstep. His love for her gradually brings to him the affection and respect of his neighbors; he considers her more precious than his lost gold. Sixteen years later, the corpse of Squire Cass’s thieving son, along with Marner’s gold, is discovered in the newly drained stone pit. Marner’s belief that “everything comes to light” takes a new turn when Eppie’s natural father attempts to reclaim her as his own.
