The True King: Tolkien and the Medieval

The True King: Tolkien and the Medieval

by Bradley J. Birzer

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute Lecture Program assists in sponsoring lectures each year at the college, university, and preparatory school levels. ISI makes available top scholars and nationally known speakers to lecture at campuses across the country. These events examine both popular topics, such as affirmative action and core curriculum controversies, as well as perennial concerns, such as the nature of freedom and the best forms of government. ISI's lectures are rooted in fundamental principles and the enduring Western intellectual patrimony.

Bradley Birzer is Assistant Professor of History at Hillsdale College. A Senior Fellow with the Center for the American Idea in Houston, he has written extensively on Tolkien, James Fenimore Cooper, the American frontier and American indians, and Christopher Dawson

LearnOutLoud.com Review:

The Man Behind Lord of the Rings
This lecture released by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute serves as a wonderful way you can learn more about Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. Lecturer Bradley J. Birzer discusses the major themes in Tolkien''s work including the onslaught of modernity, the true value of good in the world and the gift of loyalty. Birzer ends with a beautiful description of the character Samwise Gamgee, and how his role in the book serves as a symbol of Tolkien''s belief system in action.

Well done. Lively and multi-faceted., February 18, 2009
Reviewer: kiezein

I was surprised, pleasantly, by how many POV the lecturer covers, his comparisons of Tolkien's writing style with CS Lewis and other such points of interest that are good fodder for further reading if one is interested enough.
In discussing Tolkien's love of mythology and the point of inception of LOTR, we hear about Tolkien's expertise on Beowolf, his religious influences, as well as his feelings about the impact of the war and other effects of his period's culture on his views.
The lecturer also gives an interesting summary analysis of current days and understanding of mythology and religion and how our culture is suffering from our having divorced ourselves either or both.
While the lecture is not terribly deep it covers a wide swath of material on LOTR and Tolkien and is worth a listen if you are relatively new to the whole LOTR or Tolkien scholarship.
I'm not sure the previous reviewer, Ms. Langley, meant to give a half-star rating based on what she said.

Good Tolkien scholarship and interesting to the general Tolkien fan too, February 28, 2008

Professor Birzer is an interesting speaker, easy to listen to, and he knows his Tolkien.
