Aeneid of Virgil

Aeneid of Virgil

by Elizabeth Vandiver

The Aeneid is ancient Rome’s great national epic. It was basic to the education of generations of Romans and inspired such writers and artists as St. Augustine, Dante, Chaucer, Tennyson, and T. S. Elliot.

This course explores the background, main themes, and significant episodes of Virgil’s gripping tale, in which Aeneas journeys west from ruined Troy to found a new nation in Italy. You will consider this epic’s mythic and literary background, which includes the Trojan War and the legends of Romulus and Remus, as well as Virgil’s larger literary career and his view of Roman history.

This course can stand alone or complement Professor Elizabeth Vandiver’s lectures on Homer, to whom The Aeneid is a tribute.

If anyone has ever sat through a class on Roman literature like I did, and enjoyed it, they are sure to love the lecture course entitled, “Aeneid of Virgil”. This course was taught by Professor Elizabeth Vandiver at Whitman College.

The audio is clear in its description of Virgil’s “Aeneid” which breaks down into simple English the whole point for this piece of literature. It describes the trip of Aeneas and his men leading to the birth of Rome after the Trojan War. Aeneas traveled to Carthage and encountered Venus who led him to Queen Dido. The “Aeneid of Virgil” describes Dido’s end by taking her life.

I found that a lot of background information was given in the first four lectures before the “Aeneid of Virgil” was really discussed. Professor Vandiver was able to highlight the main themes within the tale of Aeneas while paying special attention to the importance of Dido in the story.

This lecture course illustrated more about what was going on in the “Aeneid” rather than reading it and trying to decipher it yourself. It also went into descriptive detail about the death of Turnus by Aeneas.

This course is especially good for students of literature trying to make sense of this complex piece of literature. It can be viewed on DVD or video cassette. The audio cassettes had a runtime of approximately six hours and came with six high quality tapes.
