This course uses 113 examples ranging from Renaissance poems to contemporary American verse to explore the three areas that distinguish poetry from other forms of literature—figurative language, music and sound, and tone of voice.
This is not a survey course or analysis of "hidden" meanings. By demonstrating how poets go about their business of communication, it provides a practical framework for evaluating and appreciating poems old and new in terms of poetic techniques, patterns, habits, and genres.
In so doing, the course shows you how to hear the words of the English language’s greatest poets with deeper understanding and renewed immediacy.
