An old English King, tired of his kingly duties, plans to divide his kingdom between his three daughters and to entrust himself to their care. To decide how to divide up the kingdom, King Lear asks each of his three daughters to tell him how much they love him. His two eldest daughters, Regan and Goneril, shower him with false praise and words of love. But his youngest daughter, Cordelia, who truly loves her father, cannot speak falsely. She looks down at the floor and says nothing. Enraged, Lear divides his kingdom between Reagan and Goneril, and banishes Cordelia from the land.
What follows is Lear's descent into madness and despair at the mercy of wicked Regan and Goneril, as Cordelia, backed by the French army and a few loyal supporters, fight to save Lear and his kingdom from their murderous tyranny.
This book is a vivid prose retelling of Shakespeare's great tragedy.
