Young stakes out a middle ground in the diametrically opposed playing fields which exist around biomedical ethics. He looks at contraception as a matter of personal empowerment and a form of population control and discusses the opposing views of the religious establishment. He also explores whether or not it is moral to destroy or fertilize surplus eggs, whether gestational surrogacy is glorified prostitution, and if there are limits to aggressive treatment in neonatal and adult intensive care. But the underlying question is - are scientists playing God by manipulating when we are born, how we are born, and how long we are going to live?
