Birth of the Modern Mind

Birth of the Modern Mind

The Intellectual History of the 17th and 18th Centuries

by Alan Charles Kors

Modern science, representative democracy, and a wave of wars were caused by a revolution of the intellect that seized Europe between 1600 and 1800.

The goal of these lectures is to understand the intellectual revolution of the Enlightenment. You see the birth of modern thought in the dilemmas, debates, and extraordinary works of the 17th- and 18th-century mind.

You study the dominance of Aristotelean scholasticism and the assault on it in the 1600s in the work of Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, and Pascal.

You see the watershed impact of Newton and the expansion of the new philosophy in Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Hume, as well as the dissenting voice of Rousseau.

The “Birth Of The Modern Mind” was presented in detail by Professor Alan Kors from the University of Pennsylvania. Even though the course was not on a topic that I know much about or have been interested in the past, Kors’ scientific explanation of how our thought patterns, morals, and views have changed over time was quite interesting.

How society and science has been influenced was illustrated in the works of Sir Isaac Newtown who was responsible for many of the Laws of Physics used today. As well, Professor Alan Kors also showed how modern thought has also received some input by the Calvinistic and Christian principles that many nations were founded on.

The lectures that Kors presented in the “Birth of the Modern Mind” highlighted the post modernistic view of society and how it has formed and shaped the modern views of today. The lectures were available on audio cd or audio cassette for a total listening time of twelve to thirteen hours.
