Elisabeth Badinter recently published a new book that has swept across France: Le conflit la femme et la mere. Translated as “Conflict: The Woman and The Mother,” the book makes the argument that the greatest impediment to the advance of feminism is the baby.  Simply put, women cannot reach their potential as women because their babies are getting in the way.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler takes on this argument demonstrating how Ms. Badinter’s argument actually undermines what it means to be a woman.  Far from undermining what it means to be a woman, the Scriptures repeatedly affirm the great value of being a mother and the special calling it truly is before God. A recent editorial in The Times of London reveals that an increasing number of women are seeking abortions after they become pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF).  The fact that many women are having abortions after undergoing such extensive treatment is further evidence of the tragic state of human beings.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler exposes the twisted logic this story reveals arguing that this only adds to the evidence that humanity is in desperate need as it seeks to take the place of the Creator.  While laws may be passed to stop these tragic abortions from occurring, laws will never be the solution in and of themselves.  The only sufficient rescue comes from outside of us in the person and work of Jesus Christ. An 8-year-old yells at his father trying to make him put his coat on, calling him a “control-freak.”  The New York Times cover story from May 23, 2010, “Every Hug, Every Fuss” documents this conversation recorded by researchers from the UCLA, who have been following 32 families for 3 years, videotaping every move.  The dual-earner, multiple-child model of the American family today has its struggles and UCLA has given us a picture of it.  Are parents parenting as seriously as they think they are?  There is an enormous shift in authority towards the child where children’s desires and will are central in the family.  Parenting is not a sociological invention, it is central to God’s design for the world.  Parents are called to be the authority figures who draw appropriate and safe boundaries for their children so that they may be successful later in life. While the question may seem a bit odd, the daily newspaper provides indisputable evidence that people do stupid things.  From lying about their past military service to adulterous affairs, human beings do stupid things because human beings are sinners.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler not only argues that people make irrational decisions because of sin but also calls on the culture to recapture the language of sin.  While the culture may offer many solutions as to why people do stupid things, only the church can precisely diagnose the problem and provide the true remedy. Just days ago, Dr. Craig Venter and his associates announced the achievement of the first synthetic life form, a bacterium with DNA sequenced entirely by computer — a human-designed life form.  The international media have seized upon the news, published officially in the journal Science.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses this issue with Dr. Stephen Meyer.  They agree that what Dr. Venter and his team accomplished was the synthesizing of the largest-ever piece of DNA. They did not create an organism from the ground up, but used the existing cell of another bacterium.  As we wrestle with this issue, we must think hard about whether this is a journey we are ready to entrust to scientists alone. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, recently sent an email asserting his company’s right to refuse to sell pornography.  Answering the objection that he was “imposing his morality about porn,” Mr. Jobs informed a disgruntled customer that he might think differently about pornography if he were a parent.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses how being a parent really does affect one’s worldview.  While many in the popular culture believe freedom is license to do whatever one may choose, parents understand that giving such freedom to their own children will harm them.  Far from being restrictive,the restraints that God has put in place to lead his creatures away from sin actually frees them to be the humans they were made to be. Franklin Graham’s recent comments calling Islam a false religion caused quite a controversy in the public sphere.  As the West becomes increasingly secular, it is generally assumed that holding to the exclusive truths of the gospel over and against another religious truth claim is out of bounds.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses this important topic with  Thabiti Anyabwile, author of the book, The Gospel for Muslims.  A former muslim himself, Mr. Anyabwile humbly defends the Christian truth claims against those of Islam.  As religious diversity becomes the norm in the United States, Christians must have confidence that the gospel alone is still “the power of God unto salvation” for sinners from every religious background. In today’s edition of The Times, Ruth Gledhill argues that Anglicans should come to a compromise agreement about homosexuality.  Gledhill writes, “In other words, the infighting over homosexuality means that for the 77 million Anglicans worldwide, more important than the Resurrection, the Crucifixion, the Virgin Birth and the Trinity is what one person does in bed with another.”  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler argues that this is not a subject about which Christians can compromise.  While the culture may attempt to give direction to the church, the church’s only source of true authority for her life and doctrine is the Word of God. Earlier this week, Kathleen Parker used her column in The Washington Post to take on Franklin Graham and his belief that belief in Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation.  Parker argued that “Graham’s views didn’t sit very well with secular Americans or even non-evangelical Christians.â€�  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler addresses this important issue by challenging Christians to be ready to stand for the exclusive claims of the gospel.  Ms. Parker’s column is yet another signpost of the current age and the worldview of the secularized classes.  In their view, what evangelicals believe about the Gospel of Jesus Christ is embarrassing, and younger evangelicals will eventually abandon it.  The question that remains to be answered is whether she is right. Trinity University Law School Senior Senior Sidra Qureshi wants the words “in the Year of Our Lord” removed from her graduation diploma.  Arguing that a diploma is a personal item and such words are not in accord with her personal beliefs, Qureshi said she started the petition in order to assure the school’s commitment to diversity.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler addresses this story arguing that it demonstrates the increasingly secular nature of Western culture.  Whether in this specific instance or future ones that are sure to come, historically Christian institutions will have to decide whether they will allow the culture or the Word of God to set their agenda. With the summer quickly approaching, Americans ready themselves for another Supreme Court nomination battle.  Today, President Obama nominated the current Solicitor General of the United States, Elena Kagan, to be the next Supreme Court Justice.  Given the crucial role the Supreme Court now plays in the shaping of American culture and life, Kagan’s nomination is one that Christians must take seriously.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses this nomination by challenging Christian citizens to take seriously their responsibility to ask the right questions.  Of all citizens, Christians are those who carry the greatest responsibility to live faithfully before God and submissively under their leaders.  And, in the case of Supreme Court nominations, faithfulness before God requires Christians to thoughtfully engage their leaders with questions and arguments that will lead to laws that increasingly reflect the character of God. With Mother’s Day fast approaching and the culture rapidly changing, Dr. Mohler asks an important question on today’s program.  How has motherhood changed?  In a society that has clearly lost its way in its thinking about the different roles of fathers and mothers, it’s important that Christians are firmly grounded in their understanding of the important place mothers hold in the Christian worldview.  In a world that has increasingly lost its way in its thinking about the family, mothers who fulfill their calling to the full will find themselves most fulfilled in being faithful to their families first.  Mothers are increasingly told that a focus and prioritization of their families is wrong-headed and ill-conceived.  Career, hobbies, and peer pressure create expectations that run counter to the significant role that God ordained mothers to perform.  In God’s ordering of the world and human relationships, faithfulness always leads to fulfillment, whereas fulfillment does not produce faithfulness.  We as Christians must recognize and affirm, in the midst of an onslaught of pressures, that the calling to be a mother is a God-given calling that will lead to the utmost fulfillment. Marking the National Day of Prayer, Evangelist Franklin Graham led in prayer outside of the Pentagon today.  Mr. Graham was disinvited from praying inside of the Pentagon because he held to the exclusivity of the gospel over and against Islam in an interview after September 11, 2001.  His comments were rendered “inappropriate” by a Pentagon spokesman.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses this telling story and the reality that the exclusive claims of the gospel are increasingly at odds with the secular culture.  Franklin Graham will not be the last to be tested.  Who will be tested next? Dale McAlpine was recently arrested in Great Britain for telling a passerby that homosexuality is a sin.  Mr. McAlpine was charged not only because he called homosexuality a sin but also because he spoke “in a voice loud enough to be heard by others.”  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler talks about this telling story with Mike Judge, Head of Communications at The Christian Institute.  Existing specifically for “the furtherance and promotion of the Christian religion in the United Kingdom,” The Christian Institute is specifically dedicated to upholding the truths of the Bible in the public sphere.  While this story clearly reveals that The Christian Institute has their work cut out for them in the future, it also reveals the direction the culture is rapidly headed in the future apart from a gracious work of God. Nancy Keenan, the current President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, is worried that many of the women in the next generation are not as committed to abortion rights as she would like them to be. Newsweek’s Sarah Kliff recently published a story highlighting the shift in momentum on the abortion issue.  In a revealing interview, Ms. Keenan notes that she “just doesn’t see a passion among the post-Roe generation at least on her side.”  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler discusses this important shift in the abortion fight.  There is great hope that, as has happened in the past, the public conscience is changing on this vital moral issue of our age. A recent study reveals that many pastors are remaining in denominations in which they are no longer able to give consent to the statement of faith that their denominations hold.  Often motivated by financial incentive not to break ranks, pastors simply stay in their churches and lead the sheep astray.  On today’s program, Dr. Mohler addresses this disatrous situation calling on pastors who no longer believe to leave.  Given the gravity of what is at stake in pastoral ministry, it is imperative that the pastor have at least enough courage of conviction to leave his denomination when he can no longer honestly subscribe to the very basic tenants of the faith.
