During 37 years in the priesthood, Cardinal Roger Mahony has been an advocate for the underdog, most recently siding publicly with striking janitors in Los Angeles. He's confronted some of society's thorniest issues including immigration, affirmative action, housing for the poor, abortion and the role of women. Last year, he lobbied in vain for California Governor Gray Davis to spare the life of a Thai immigrant who was facing execution for a 1981 double murder. And while the cardinal, of course, sympathizes with crime victims, he says opposing the death penalty is well in keeping with the church's pro-life stance on abortion and euthanasia. The cardinal also is a vocal opponent of California's Propositions 18 and 21, which would expand the use of capital punishment and give prosecutors more power in deciding whether juveniles are tried as adults. He shares his thoughts and beliefs in this May 25, 2000 address at the National Press Club.
