Patrick J . Buchanan, co-editor of the American Conservative magazine and a syndicated columnist, is the author of 'The Death of the West' and 'A Republic, Not an Empire.' Mr. Buchanan ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1992 and 1996 and was the Reform Party's presidential candidate in 2000. In 1969, Mr. Buchanan was a White House advisor and speechwriter to Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew.
