This compelling PBS miniseries follows Benjamin Franklin's impressive career, from scientist and revolutionary to founding father and American diplomat. Drawing on Franklin's own writings and those of his contemporaries, the narrative is set against a backdrop of breathtaking events in which Franklin played a central role: the age of Scientific Discovery, the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary war and the Constitutional Convention.

Content review: Benjamin Franklin is one of America's most colorful figures. He is one of those individuals who you always seem to be learning something new about. Indeed, while watching this excellent PBS documentary on his life I learned many new things. I learned that Franklin had a tremendous row with his son, that he was quite the womanizer and that he was the only founding father who actively opposed the institution of slavery.
Franklin's genius is evident in so many aspects of his life from his work as an inventor to his incredible efforts as a statesmen during the most critical period in American History. This documentary does a tremendous job of detail his multi-faceted personality and keeps the viewer engaged through a rotation of viewpoints from historians, monologues from actors portraying various characters from Franklin's life and historical reenactments of parts of his past. Overall you'll find this highly enjoyable regardless of how much you know about Ben Franklin.
Video-specific content: I rented the 3+ hour DVD from Netflix. It was very well done and engaging. Mixing up the format keeps the viewer's attention throughout the film. I enthusiastically recommend this title.
