1984 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address

1984 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address

by Mario Cuomo

"On behalf of the great Empire State and the whole family of New York, let me thank you for the great privilege of being able to address this convention. Please allow me to skip the stories and the poetry and the temptation to deal in nice but vague rhetoric. Let me instead use this valuable opportunity to deal immediately with the questions that should determine this election and that we all know are vital to the American people."

-Mario Cuomo

This speech was delivered 16 July 1984 to at Democratic National Convention, San Francisco.

A Classic Democratic Speech, February 17, 2006
Reviewer: LOLDavid from Los Angeles, California

In this speech Mario Cuomo criticizes Ronald Reagan for his view that all Americans are basking in the wealth of the free market. Cuomo reminds us of the have nots and how it is the job of the Democratic Party to remember those that aren't in the upper crust of society and to put forth government policy that protects these weak and poor in society. The Democrats are in need of the same sort of rhetoric today as the rich get richer. Cuomo also speaks for minorities and women's rights. A great speech for anyone looking to see what is at the heart of Democratic ideals.
