The Mission of the Acton Institute is to promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles.
The Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty is named after the great English historian, Lord John Acton (1834-1902). He is best known for his famous remark: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Inspired by his work on the relation between liberty and morality, the Acton Institute seeks to articulate a vision of society that is both free and virtuous, the end of which is human flourishing. To clarify this relationship, the Institute holds seminars and publishes various books, monographs, periodicals, and articles.

The Ethanol Fiasco

Ray Nothstine, an associate editor at Acton, joins host Bud Hedinger on AM 540 WFLA in Orlando, Florida to discuss the unintended consequences of the federal government's decision to heavily promote and subsidize corn-based ethanol as an alternative to petroleum based fuels. As Mr. Nothstine predicted last year, the result of the diversion of a large portion of the corn crop into fuel production has resulted in rising prices for food, while at the same time fuel prices continue to rise.

Kishore Jayabalan worked for several years at the Holy See's Mission in the United Nations, before working at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the Vatican. He is currently the director of the Acton Institute's Rome office, Istituto Acton. He gives us his impression of the Pope's speech at the United Nations. The pope, says Jayabalan, "very clearly laid out the terms of a religious understanding of 'the common good,' a common good that recognizes the role of the state, but also limits the roles of the state."
