Lay Bible Institute - Which Jesus?

Lay Bible Institute - Which Jesus?

by Jeffery Kloha

Concordia Seminary's major function is to prepare men for the holy ministry of Word and Sacraments in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. However, successful completion of the Seminary curriculum with conferral of the Master of Divinity degree does not guarantee eligibility for ordination or placement into the church's ministerium. Those graduating students endorsed by the faculty for the pastoral office are awarded the theological diploma in addition to the Master of Divinity degree and thereby become eligible for a call into the holy ministry (see 1995 Handbook of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Bylaw 2.13 a, 1-2). Since The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod does not admit women to the pastoral office, none are enrolled in the Master of Divinity or the Doctor of Ministry programs. The Seminary also offers advanced degree programs to qualified students of theology and serves as a center for theological research, scholarship, and continuing education of the clergy.

Jeff does a great job of intelectulaizing and explaining the historical and exhaustive works of what made todays bible. However, he seems to do what most devoted religious people do. And that is to take what supports his world view, and reject that which doesn't. Therefore as one seeking religious and spiritual truth it is hard to share Jeff's view. In addition he talks about Agnosticism and Christian Agnosticism and how it is false in all of it's undertakings. He explains it as a snowball religion taking in whatever it encounters and incorporating into it's belief system. Although I get what Jeff is getting at, I find that a group accepting beliefs from other faiths and using whats beneficial is quite humble and open too seeking truth. Yet I understand that Jeff is making a point that there beliefs may be shaky and not as confirmed as his own sort-of well legaly written out ones. He also seems to put fasting and acetism in a negative context although he may of not done so intentionally, rather making an argument against agnosticism. In conlusion it is good to understand the bible and the nature in which it was put together, however one may also find some profund experiences in practicing a Christ-like life of prayer, meditation, fasting, and acts of service. Unfortunately I find Jeff's lecture lacking this and simply think that one should incorporate such practices along with their already established relgion. Lastly, as religious people or spiritual practitioners we should be mindful and careful constructing are own religious beliefs, and at the same time deconstructing others.

What agony to listen to this audio torture, January 28, 2008

Regardless of the (loose, self-serving content and non-existent logical) content, listening to more than an hour of this sirenlike UP DOWN UP sine-wave pitched audio series needs "some" effort. Unless tied to a cross to listen to (though you can still resist) treat your ears more kindly. The manner in which this guy talks drives you INSANE. Go get yourself a short description of his line of thinking readily available and free if you have to convince yourself you're a Trinity believer or else why bother?

Delightful Surprise, November 22, 2007

I am familiar with some of Professor Kloha's work. When I saw that this was available on your site I was delightfully surprised. High caliber scholarship, interesting and relevant presentation.

very helpful information for our times, October 19, 2007

This is a series of lectures for lay people on some basics related to the historical development of the Christian faith, including witnesses, some hostile to Christianity, to Jesus' divinity and the truth of the New Testament. A stated purpose is to arm college students for countering the view of Christianity that will be pushed on them at many educational institutions today. This is a series of lectures that were recorded, not a polished narration. There are vocal pauses, etc.; but, the information is very solid.
