In Praise of Slowness

In Praise of Slowness

Changing the Cult of Speed

by Carl Honore

In the race for success, the information age has taken the torch from the Industrial Revolution. Efficiency, speed, and multi-tasking have brought us 24/7 work lives and overscheduled children. Has it made us more productive? Or is the pace of life spinning out of control? Should we slow down and how can we do so without turning back the clock?

LearnOutLoud.com Review:

 Slow Down!
At LearnOutLoud.com we must confess that we are quite addicted to speed. Audio learning itself is a form of multi-tasking which allows us to never slow down. But it''s good to recognize and question this aspect of our hurried life styles, which author Carl Honore (The Power of Slow) does in this lecture offered through the Cambridge forum. He contrasts the speed at which Americans go versus other cultures around the world, and focuses on what can be lost in a culture addicted to going faster.

This podcast is a very interesting podcast by Canadian journalist and writer Carl Honore who is based in London, England, and who has written for papers like The Economist. Carl has published a book with the name ‘In Praise of Slowness’ and this podcast is a discussion based on the content of that book.

Carl starts by discussing how we have made our lives work on speed, how we are always trying to reach that goal which we never reach. He talks about how we used to read and now we speed-read, how we used to walk and now we speed-walk, and also how now we even speed-date! He tells his experiences with publishing the book, and how he was asked in an interview to sum up his book in 35 seconds, and how he spent more time in CNN’s make-up room for an interview that was much shorter! The podcast further goes on to tell about Japan’s slow-schooling movement and so on.

This is an excellent podcast that you should check out yourself.

The audio quality is good and the narration is clear.
