Greil Marcus discusses his book "In The Shape of Things to Come" as part of the Authors@Google series. He traces America's fable of self-invention, from its earliest Puritan beginnings to its successive retellings in the work of diverse contemporary artists. Marcus considers the birth of America as a New Jerusalem, a place of promises so vast they could only be betrayed. From that betrayal emerges the nation's prophetic voice, the voice that calls America's citizens to self-judgment.American cultural critic Greil Marcus created the terrain on which music joins the greater drama of modern life in his books Mystery Train (1975), Lipstick Traces (1989), and The Old Weird America (1997). He was the first review editor at Rolling Stone, in 1969, and has been a columnist for the Village Voice, Artforum, Salon.com, The New York Times, and Esquire; he currently writes a monthly column for Interview.This event took place August 23, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.
