1/3 - Pet Owners Have Other Lives Too Don't They?

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Mon, May 25, 2009

Long time listeners to Pet Talk Radio! will know we both have a broad based media background. Like you, our lives have many aspects other than pets - although they do take up a fair proportion of our lives that's for sure. As part of our ever growing on-line media projects, we wanted to introduce you to our newest project - one we are very passionate about. It's called Seven Easy Steps and is located at www.seveneasysteps.com.au We will be offering low-cost or free e-books and audio on a range of topics some of which will be pet and animal related. Initially we have produced three e-books - 2 low-cost and a third absolutely free - that we think you might be interested in. In many ways dog trainers, and people trainers have similar roles - They need to communicate their messages to PEOPLE first. Some people can do this better than others, but our experience has shown most people aren't very good at communicating at all. This can be through shyness, being poorly prepared or some other impediment. Kaye's new e-book will be a big help to anyone making a presentation, going for a job interview or making an important phone call perhaps to get new business. It's called 'Speak Better-Fast!' and comes with bonus audio plus a free copy of 'Why We Hear But We Don't Listen'. Both of these items are available in this iTunes feed or via our website 'seveneasysteps.com.au' Brian has also put his thoughts down both as an e-book and an audio book - all about being 'happy' - it's called 'Take This Job & Shove It!' - you can work out for yourself what that's all about - but please take some time to listen to the audio from these new titles and consider buying the books or recommending them to a friend. We also have free copies of Kaye's book - Speak Better-Fast! - for any unemployed persons support groups, church groups or charities who may benefit from Kaye's professional speaking background. And if you were wondering about Pet Talk Radio, Essential Pet and Pet Product Reviews we mentioned recently?... Yep - all part of our day jobs as we continue to try and bring a wide range of interesting pet and non pet related services to pet owners.

2/3 - Speak Better - FAST! - by Kaye Browne

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Mon, May 25, 2009

Like most people – I hated having to speak ‘publicly’ when I was younger – and yet I’ve made a career out of speaking on TV and radio and lecturing in Journalism, PR and presentation skills. Crazy – right? Not at all when you know the tricks of the trade to feeling comfortable when you speak – and these are waiting for you right now in my ‘Seven Easy Steps To Speak Better – Fast!’ This e-book is the result of many people asking me to help them with some practical advice – and fast - because they had to make an important phone call to a prospective employer, or they had to front an interview panel, or maybe they had to present their ideas to a business meeting. They felt sick with nerves – certain they were doomed to failure. Understandable fears but unnecessary. Anyone CAN and WILL sound much more confident than they really feel if they just do a few key things (7 of them actually) so that when you open your mouth a nice, mellow, confident sounding and interesting voice comes out and your audience tunes in. That’s what you want – and that’s what you WILL get with my ‘Seven Easy Steps to Speak Better – Fast’. Kaye Browne

3/3 - Take This Job & Shove It! - by Brian Pickering

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Mon, May 25, 2009

The boss at a radio station where I was working was chewing my ear one day, complaining like he always did about his life, his boss, his useless sales team, his feelings of unhappiness. And out it popped… I didn’t plan to say it – but once I did – it seemed so right… So very much a step forward rather than just treading water, an option to make a difference, to end the endless gripes. If you don’t like it, why doncha just leave? And he DID! - Making all of us much happier If it worked for him - HEY! - it can work for all of us. So don’t waste any more time being unhappy when in just 7 easy steps you can be well on your way to being a whole lot happier! Brian Pickering

PTR #303 FEATURE STORY: Why Won't My Dogs Listen?

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 7, 2009

"Fido come. Fido COME. FIDO C.O.M.E!!!" Sound familiar? Do you have a dog with selective hearing? Why is it you never have to call your dog when the treat bag is accidentally rustled or the toaster pops at breakfast time? We get a lot of questions at Pet Talk Radio! but most of these concern jumping, digging, barking – you know, the usual stuff! One very concerned listener wants to know why all her friends' dogs seem to listen to them, but her two Dachies don't seem to listen to her at all – to anything she says! Listen to what animal trainer Steve Austin suggests in this segment. Does your dog listen to you? Or does he or she only listen when it suits them?

PTR #302 FEATURE STORY: Ways To Cope With Wacky Weather

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Fri, Mar 13, 2009

Australia's weather has been crazy over the past few months. Floods in Queensland, snow in Melbourne and then the tragic bushfires, then just as suddenly, another cold snap followed by a heatwave. While Pet Talk Radio! doesn't normally discuss the weather, we do when it affects our animals. It's not just cows, sheep and horses who spend their time outdoors. We have had personal experience with our own dog Cosmo – so absolutely terrified of storms to the point he just couldn't function! With plenty of animals of his own to look after, Dr Harry Cooper has experienced first-hand the strange new weather patterns. Listen as he sheds some light on what the future holds if these conditions continue

PTR #301 FEATURE STORY: Touch Your Dog The T-Touch Way!

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Mon, Feb 16, 2009

Ever heard of an ear slide? It's one of the key techniques used in T-touch. It's actually Tellington Touch – named after its inventor Linda Tellington, who discovered she could connect with and calm nervous or aggressive animals using specific massaging motions. Sceptics claimed it was just a fancy name for acupressure or massage, but the technique has now spread to more than 26 countries of the world – including Australia – where delighted puppy parents claim it's miraculous. So does it work and can anyone perform the ear slice? Sydney practitioner Andy Robertson (who trained under Linda Tellington herself) says absolutely, while T-touching and transforming Kismet, our boisterous poodle into a wuzzy puddle.

PTR #300 FEATURE STORY: Puppy Pre-Schools - Finding A Good One - Steve Austin

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Sat, Jan 31, 2009

It's back to school time... and for many young children it's also their very first time mixing with other kids, learning new things and generally finding out what they can and can't do in the world. And it's the same for your new puppy. It needs to learn 'who's the boss' as well as what it can and can't do (like don't chew on the shoes Fido!) But how can you tell a good puppy pre-school from a not so good one? Especially if you're a brand new pet parent. Animal trainer Steve Austin is this week's feature Story and gives some great tips on finding just the right place for you and your new puppy.

PTR #299 FEATURE STORY: Growly Dogs = Back Off Buddy With Australia's most popular veterinarian - Dr Harry Cooper

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Wed, Dec 10, 2008

Part of a dog's natural behaviour is to growl. Many dog owners think their dog is aggressive because they growl. Sometimes this is the case and Dr Harry talks about that in this featured story, but generally dog to dog growling, especially at feeding time is a natural behaviour that most dogs understand the meaning of. Dogs growling at humans is an absolute no no... but knowing that a growling dog is saying 'back off or I'll bite' is certainly good to know! Young children especially can be a threat to dogs - some dogs see screaming 3 year old kids as 'aliens'... pulling their tails, shouting and running. A young child does not understand what a growl means. Once again Dr Harry has some great advice for all dog loving families.

PTR #289 FEATURE STORY: Dealing With Separation Anxiety - With Steve Austin

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Aug 12, 2008

Why do our pets - dogs in particular - get what is commonly known as 'Separation Anxiety'? But more importantly - how can we solve it? Of course animal trainer and featured co-host Steve Austin comes to the rescue of one listener whose Cavalier King Charles Spaniel just can't stand the thought of its owner literally leaving the room, and Steve has some unique ways to help solve this very common problem. Do you have a dog that suffers from Separation Anxiety? - we do... and badly, particularly overnight... but that could also be due to a medical condition we are aware of. So no matter what you hear on Pet Talk Radio or read on the internet - PLEASE... always see your vet for a check-up... it might just be the best money you ever spent for the health and well-being of your pet.

PTR #288 FEATURE STORY: Pet Dentists - Save Your Pet's Teeth & Save You Money! - Dr Barbara Fougere

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Aug 5, 2008

We know now from personal experience that cleaning your pet's teeth from an early age particularly a dog's is just as important as cleaning your own teeth every day. Why?.. because dogs and cats are just as prone to tooth decay and other nasty mouth and gum problems as we are, and if not diagnosed and treated early, these problems can lead to more and more complications including tooth extraction. So how do pet dentists save you money?... Well like most medical (or mechanical problems for that matter) if the problem is found early, your overall costs are much less than if you leave it, hoping it will go away. It won't! Who better to tell us about the problem than our own vet Dr Barbara Fougere?

PTR #286 FEATURE STORY: Bad Pets, Bad Management or Bad Owners? + BSL With Veterinary Behaviourist Dr Kersti Seksel

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jul 22, 2008

There are two issues here animals that really are bad because they're born that way and others that are bad because of their circumstances. Even with some of the country's toughest laws particularly regarding dogs people still get bitten or attacked almost every day and cat owners still leave cats out at night that wander around the neighbourhood killing local wildlife. We currently have a bunch of tom cats roaming the neighbourhood at night looking for a cute (very young) little female who is obviously on heat. A house around the corner had a sign out a few months ago "Kittens $30 each". Clearly they didn't sell them all (or de-sex them) and the consequences are now obvious. Are these 'bad pets' or simply bad owners giving the rest of us pet owners a bad name? According to expert veterinary behaviourist Dr Kersti Seksel, some animals may actually be born 'bad' (particularly dogs that have a 'bad attitude') and all the training in the world is not going to help. Australia's top veterinary behaviourist, Dr Seksel has some very interesting things to say about all this and BSL or Breed Specific Legislation (which can be heard from about 3:30mins in)

PTR #285 FEATURE STORY: Ipswich Council Replies Re Dog Bark Collars - Andrew Antoniolli

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Wed, Jul 16, 2008

Since we aired the original story (above), Councillor Andrew Antoniolli (left) who is Chairperson of the Health & Regulation Committee (Ipswich City) contacted us and asked to appear on the show... Mr Antoniolli said "I listened to the concerns of Dr Sillince who was sceptical of the applications that these collars can be used and (she) seemed to be fixated on the very rare case that a complainant neighbour could exploit the use of the collar." "Council sees the use of the collars in a completely different light." he added. We spoke with Councillor Antoniolli to learn how these collars are really being used and what results they have had on neighbourhood barking complaints.

PTR #284 Segment 1/5 - Opener & Latest Pet News - With Kaye & Brian

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jul 8, 2008

Thanks for joining us this week on Pet Talk Radio! As the only weekly current affairs show for pet lovers we try to bring you the very latest pet and animal issues from around the world this week we have some great stories for you! So how would you feel if your local council responded to complaints from your neighbours by putting an electronic recording collar on your pooch to keep tabs on when it barked? Well that's exactly what Ipswich Council in Queensland is doing with canine offenders. Sound a bit like Big Brother? Dr Joanne Sillince is with us to talk about these collars and the potential problems for abuse. And our first ever Pet Talk Radio! online poll after we spoke to Mark Richmond about Savannah Cats revealed around 88% of voters said Australia doesn't need Savannah Cats – but the breeders and importers of these fancy felines reckon we might be being a little unfair. Dr Jo Sillince tells us why in this week's show. As always, whether you agree or disagree with anything you hear on Pet Talk Radio! we'd love you to tell us on the Pet Talk Radio! Forum! You'll hear the latest animal news from across Australia and around the world in this segment (Seg 1) as Kaye tells us about the latest attire for the UK's police sniffer dogs, Australia's deadliest animals AND – some unusual stowaways after a UK couples' overseas holiday! We hope you enjoy this week's Pet Talk Radio! Kaye & Brian, Matisse, Kismet & Monet!

About Our New Pet Specific Channels

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jul 1, 2008

Hi everyone, Thank you for the feedback on our newly re-designed ‘look’! Now we’re working on the sound - or more specifically -the ‘content’ that we bring you every week. Life would be pretty boring if we stayed the same all our lives. The same goes for Pet Talk Radio! which is why we constantly look for ways to make it better. Make it more fun, more educational and more topical, in short make the stories we do more relevant to pet lovers everywhere. We used to describe the program as 'the show for people with more than a passing interest in pets'. While that's still very true, we think our contributors and listeners have helped evolve Pet Talk Radio! into a more important role as; 'The Only Weekly Current Affairs Show For Pet Owners...' What do you think? - Don’t worry we’re not about to axe all the great experts who come on the show to help us with finding ways to control our barking/digging/jumping dogs or our scratching/spraying/crying pussy-cats or cranky/biting/feather-plucking birds or... any of the species we regularly talk about! But there are many more stories or issues that are important to pet owners and pet lovers that barely rate a mention in mainstream media. That’s why we’ve developed a new moderated 'pets only forum' where you can tell us - and the world exactly what you think about the topics on our show and on matters of wider importance to people and pets, such as the current pet rental crisis in Queensland or the proposed changes to where pets can be bought. Things that will ultimately affect all pet owners across the country . We think it’s important to know what’s happening in pet communities around the country – and indeed around the world which is why we now have correspondents in the USA, UK & Europe and in every capital city in Australia. Tell us what you think - Comment on current stories... If it's about animals - and domestic pets in particular, you'll hear about it on Pet Talk Radio! And, more importantly – you can have your say and discuss it through our new forum - www.Forum.PetTalkRadio.com.au Hope you enjoy this week's show as much as we do bringing it to you every week. PTR #283 Segment 1/5 - Opener & Latest Pet News + DOGSLife Sponsorship - With Kaye & Brian

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jul 1, 2008

Thanks for joining us again on Pet Talk Radio! We have a very special show for you this week – well, they’re all special really – but this is a special show because it’s the first show of our partnership with Dogs Life Magazine – Australia’s number one magazine for dog lovers… It’s a pretty special occasion for us and community radio too because it’s the first time to our knowledge that a national radio show about animals and pets has joined forces with a national publication of any kind really to spread the word about each other. Dogs Life is published by Universal Magazines which is Australia’s biggest niche magazine publisher. Actually Dogs Life is recognised as being the number one magazine for dogs and dog lovers in Australia and New Zealand with around 90,000 readers. And each issue of the bi-monthly magazine will feature stories that we’ll also broadcast on this radio show. How cool is that?! – of course this doesn’t mean we’re going to forget all you cat, horse, fish or reptile owners or even owners of pocket pets… far from it… But for this week – it’s dogs, dogs and more dogs… If you would like to share your views on anything you read in Dogs Life magazine or hear on our show you can go to our Pet Talk Radio! Forum and tell us what you think. And Australia's only Pet & Animal news bulletin is brought to you every week by Kaye which you can hear in this segment (Seg 1), including stories about a thirsty croc's visit to the local pub, and some real 'jail birds'! We hope you enjoy this special dogs only edition of Pet Talk Radio! proudly sponsored by Dogs Life Magazine! Kaye & Brian, Matisse, Kismet & Monet!

Thanks for joining us again... or if it's your first time here – welcome to Pet Talk Radio! We received a huge response to last week's 'Who Created Death Row?' story. Thank you for taking the time to go to our website and read our article on the issue of unwanted and lost pets in Australia. We’d especially like to thank those people who say that they’ve taken a renewed interest in the issue as a result of the facts in our article. Some say they can now see that pet shops are an obvious target – whereas the causes of the problem are much more complicated and require a wider range of solutions. Some of you disagree completely with our view of the situation… and that’s OK too… because that’s your right. We live in a democracy. Our aim is to bring as much information into the debate as possible.

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jun 17, 2008

In this week’s show we’ll certainly be taking a look at the recent story on Chan 9’s SUNDAY program about ‘Death Row Pets’. We won’t be labouring the point but we do think they missed a vital component in the whole equation of why so many animals are surrendered or dumped each year. Of course that’s pretty easy to do when impetus behind that story is little lop-sided shall we say? Anyway it’s not all heavy as you’ll soon discover shortly this week… Also this week: How Can You Tell If Your Pet Is Unwell? Dr Jo Sillince has children and pets and will attempt to point out the differences in diagnosing both! We re-launch our Dog Poo competition with a ‘twist’ - America’s #1 show for pet lovers Animal Radio has thrown down the gauntlet with a challenge - it’s the international Poo-lympics Whose Poo Is Best?... Australia Vs the USA that’s a lot of fun and later in the show.. Also this week what’s happening in the UK?... The Veterinary Blonde Michelle Shanson is back with some strange news Dogs are to be banned from the famous British ‘B&B’ the Bed & Breakfast But why?... stay tuned, all that and more including a pig scared of mud but first don't forget our own miss piggy whose not scared of anything, KB with all the latest pet news.

PTR #281 Segment 2/5 - How Can You Tell If Your Pet Is Unwell? - Dr Jo Sillince

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jun 17, 2008

When people feel unwell we usually take a day or two off work, or stop doing our normal routine and hop into bed to recover. If the symptoms persist we’ll often ‘self medicate’ and take some easily available medicines for that chesty cough, headache or ‘funny tummy’. But when a potentially major health issue occurs like blinding headaches or tingling fingers or toes – most people know it’s time to go the doctor for a check-up. So how do we know when our pets are sick? Most listeners will know we had to have our eldest poodle Cosmo put to sleep recently. But did we miss some vital signals in the 12 months prior that might just have helped him in some small way? He certainly got the very best veterinary treatment no doubt about that but did we leave the veterinary diagnosis longer than needed?

Great to have you join us again on Pet Talk Radio! As the only weekly current affairs for pet lovers we try to bring you a variety of interesting stories each week – and this show is no exception. This week the 'battle of the sexes' revs up on Pet Talk Radio! Can a woman train a dog as well as a man? We are joined by a very talented lady who thinks they can. She has been training an amazing dog for a great cause. All cats lick themselves, the problem is that leads to the rather unpleasant issue of hair-balls!! Yuck! Ever wondered what to do when your cat is having trouble coughing up a hair-ball? Dr Harry is back in his finest story-telling form to tell us about how to deal with this tricky problem. Breeding dogs is easy, right? Wrong!! Our Associate Producer Wendy Herne is also a registered cocker spaniel breeder. Wendy's dog Brianna is a bit confused at the moment, she thinks she's had puppies! Wendy wishes that was the case, but sadly for everyone concerned, especially Brianna, there are no puppies. Wendy joins us to talk about false pregnancies in dogs, and just what it takes to breed a good quality litter. There's much more for you in this week's show so we hope you get a few moments to listen to all our stories. Just scroll down the page to play each story. Of course don't forget this segment where you'll hear the internationally-famous news reader Kaye Browne with all the latest pet news! PTR #280 Segment 2/5 - Kelpie Cure for Depression - Jackie Merchant

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Each year in a small town called Casterton, about 4 hours west of Melbourne – they hold the 'Casterton Kelpie Muster'. This is a really popular event where kelpie breeders get to show off their dogs’ skills as working dogs and also where farmers can source new dogs to help them in their never-ending work. But this year is a little different. This year a young dog – just 11 months old – named Beloka Red II, is competing with… wait for it…. a female handler!! Actually there’s nothing really unusual about that – except that this lady is a graphic artist by trade and has taken on a fun ‘dare’ for a serious outcome - depression. Jackie Merchant from Tasmania has helped raise and train Red and intends to auction him off with all the proceeds going to Beyond Blue – the national organisation that assists those dealing with depression – like many of the farmers in our currently drought-stricken country. Will she raise the $3,000 plus she hopes to get for Beloka Red II? – And just as important, will she be able to say goodbye to him when the auctioneer's hammer falls for the third and final time? Website: Beyond Blue Forum Topic: Working dogs – Can a woman train one as well as a man? What do you think?

PTR #280 Segment 3/5 - Dr Harry Hacks Up a Hair-Ball! - Dr Harry Cooper

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jun 10, 2008

Dr Harry Cooper loves cats...... in fact he is a breeder of champion Burmese so he knows a little bit about them. Of course Dr Harry is also a great story-teller and he has some terrific information in this story for all cat owners, including how to help move those fur balls through the cat's system more easily…. Warning: If you’re eating as you listen to this segment you might just want to put your food down for a moment! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also in this segment... Beating Doggy Boredom So many people get a dog, have fun with it for a while then leave it in the backyard all day by itself while they go off to work. These same people then wonder why Fido has been fretting all day or Fifi has started digging holes and climbing fences. In this story Dr Harry reveals a little trick to help beat doggy boredom that didn’t come from a dog trainer or animal behaviourist – it’s a trick that the dogs themselves revealed as part of their behaviour as a pack. You know it’s ok to admit that you were a 'Lassie' fan… yes, it did start in 1954 and yes, many of our listeners probably don’t want to admit that they watched it as soon as it started on Aussie TV around 1956. PTR #280 Segment 5/5 - What! - You Mean I'm NOT Pregnant? - Wendy Herne

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Jun 10, 2008

When our Associate Producer Wendy Herne told us that her beautiful cocker spaniel Brianna was no longer pregnant, that she was having a ‘phantom pregnancy’ we simply thought – "oh well, try again in 6 months time." What we didn’t realise though was how big a disappointment this was for Wendy and her entire family, and how it affected Brianna. Professional, responsible breeding is a lot of expensive hard work. Certainly Wendy doesn’t do it for the money. She clearly wants to produce the best dogs she can so the breed will continue well into the future. But as ‘non-breeders’ ourselves, we had no idea what is involved in getting things ‘just right’. Wendy tells us what is involved with responsible breeding and how Brianna has handled her false pregnancy. Forum Topic: Breeding Woes - Getting It Right!

G'day I'm Kaye Browne and this is Monet... looks pretty spoilt right? - I think he would love Dr Gaille Perry's concept of 'puppy leave' - that's leave taken when you get a new puppy! That's just one of the interesting stories we have for you this week. Of course the big one is Dr Harry talking about one of the possible major causes of hyperthyroidism - fish! Along with elevated effects in cats, humans - mainly the Japanese are also succumbing. What's causing this? Dr Harry's story is well worth a listen. And I do hope you'll listen to our Animal True or False story this week... it's a bit of fun and will test your knowledge on things like 'cats always land on their feet' - 'a dog's mouth is a natural antiseptic' - and 'butter on a kitten's paws stops it from roaming'. There are 3 stories in this segment - all absolutely fascinating! Story #1 - Puppy Leave Any listeners who have had to take maternity leave or who knows someone who has might want to listen closely to this story - because 'puppy leave' might be the thing you need most when you get your next new dog! Imagine asking your boss for that, but it seems 24/7 attention might be just the thing for future peace and happiness in the home. Forum Topic: www.forum.pettalkradio.com.au Puppy Leave...What Would Your Boss Say? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story #2 - BSL Reversed In Germany Dr Gaille Perry also tells us about some of the incredible research into animal behaviour that is actually helping decrease the incidence of dog bites, dog aggression and other behavioural problems. And in an amazing about-face, Germany has apparently reversed its BSL or Breed Specific Legislation because of some of this new research. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story #3 - Leave Pups With Mum Longer Dr Perry also talks about puppies which have been separated from their mothers prematurely and adopted from shelters being more likely to develop undesirable behaviours.. A South Australian listener - Shak Ahmed - posed this question to us: "Why is that you can keep many varieties of cats, but not so many varieties of native birds, where the justification is that the birds cause damage to the environment?" Shak reckons cats (who he also loves) cause far more decimation than his birds would even if they did somehow get loose. Another issue 'stuck in Shak's craw' are the laws that prevent him from moving to Victoria with his Noisy Miner birds, even though they're already present there in mass quantities and even though his birds are all male.

PTR #278 Segment 3/5 - Bad, Sad & Mad - The Human Side Of Animal Abuse & Neglect Dr Pauline Bennett

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 27, 2008

Animal abuse and neglect is a lot more complex than people who are ‘bad’ being cruel to animals. Some people who mistreat animals may in fact be mentally ill. Animal hoarders for example appear to have a reckless disregard for the conditions under which their animals are living but most display an inability to recognise the problem. The third category includes people who abuse animals for entertainment such as dog and cock fights and hunting. According to Dr Pauline Bennett prevention of cruelty and neglect to animals is also complex, requiring approaches from legislation and enforcement through to humane education and mental health initiatives. She say's one study had found hoarders can be so attached to their animals that they are unable to part with them, even when they have passed away.

PTR #278 Segment 4/5 - Crates, Safety Zones & Finding A Good Trainer - Terry Ryan

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 27, 2008

There are three short stories in this segment: 1) Crate Training Japanese Style A very funny story from internationally renown dog trainer Terry Ryan about how the language barrier can sometimes get in the way of communicating the right message! Along with the fun of this story it also has a terrific idea about getting a dog used to its crate*. (See side notes below) 2) Safety Zones, Timeout For Dogs and Kids We recorded over 18 hours of Terry Ryan when she spoke to some of Australia's finest dog trainers. We liked some of the novel ideas Terry uses to ensure better behaved dogs and ultimately better behaved kids!. A safety zone is one way this can be achieved. 3) What Makes A Good Dog Trainer? We get asked this question quite a lot and it's one that can be difficult to answer because there are so many different training methods and styles. But Terry Ryan has made it simple - even for us! Forum Topic: What Makes A Good Dog Trainer? Website: Legacy Canine Behaviour Training * About Crates: We'll have more stories on crate training soon with Dr Harry. But have you ever wondered about the real use of crates? People often see them for the first time at dog or cat shows. They are just a portable 'den' really. A great way for your pet to have it's own space for a short period of time - like travelling to the vet, or on holidays while you pack the car to go home. And as long as they are introduced to them at an early age, you'll have no problems later on and your pet will thank you for their own 'special place' they can go to anywhere, anytime.

It’s got a bill, but it doesn’t quack, it lays eggs but it's not a chook and it makes venom but it's not a snake. So what is this strange creature? It’s… the Platypus! And thanks to a team of 3 researchers at Sydney University’s school of veterinary science – the weird looking platypus is going to play a part in improving all our futures. We spoke with PhD student Camilla Whittington – one of just a handful of very clever young people making our future better, one teensy chromosome at a time. brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 20, 2008

We can choose not to think about it but unfortunately death comes to us all one day - human and animal. And sadly our precious pets just don’t live as long as we do. We’ve been prompted to talk about this having only recently lost our beautiful boy Cosmo. But there’s a much bigger tale to tell and it’s about the veterinarians everywhere that have to help animals die on an almost daily basis. Your vet our vet, even Dr Harry Cooper. This is a very special tribute to all those veterinarians and vet nurses who have to look an animal in the eye as they help its life slip away. This is an extremely emotional story: We recommend a quiet spot to listen and if you have your own pet nearby give them a hug from all of us. Discuss Part 2 of this story continues in the next segment... By the way if you couldn’t quite hear what Harry was saying near the end of this piece it was "I believe there is a God who sees every sparrow fall"

PTR #277 Segment 5/5 - Always Have Room In Your Life For One Animal - Dr Harry

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 20, 2008

We hope you managed to listen to the previous segment. It’s very emotional we’d agree but a very important story. To quote author Robert Frost: In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on. So true and this segment does move us forward summing up the loss of our best friends, why we need to grieve why we should all share our pain and then move on. Most importantly though is what you’re about to hear from Dr Harry. An incredibly uplifting analogy about always having room for at least one animal in your life. If you’ve managed to listen to both these stories (segment 4 above and this) thankyou. If you’ve recently lost a pet or had to have one put to sleep we share your grief and hopefully knowing you’re not alone with those feelings will be a comfort.

About Our New Pet Specific Channels

And, more importantly – you can have your say and discuss it through our new forum - www.Forum.PetTalkRadio.com.au Hope you enjoy this week's show as much as we do bringing it to you every week. brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 13, 2008

Creaky joints and the pain that comes with them are a fact of life. In recent years, many people have sworn they were helped by taking an alternative treatment glucosamine but the latest Choice magazine research reckons the pain relief is all in our heads. The consumer group reviewed all available scientific reports and concluded there wasn’t as much evidence as previously thought about glucosamine’s benefits. So we thought we’d ask an independent expert who’s done extensive research into both traditional and complementary therapies and has seen first hand their effects on her animal patients – Dr Barbara Fougere from All Natural Vet Care.

If you’re a fan of Mr Ed on TV we think it might still be running on Foxtel then you’ve probably got a somewhat warped picture of how horses live. No.1 they don’t talk not in English anyway - but their body condition and mental health speak volumes about how good their diet is. Until we spoke with horse nutrition expert Dr Nerida Richards we didn’t know how complicated it is to get horse nutrition just right. There are definite skills that need to be learnt which is partly why a very specialised group of horse experts are flying into NSW to give a seminar on May 25th on a whole range of horse health subjects. Even if you don't have a horse yourself this is a great story - and who knows... you'll be able to show-off your knowledge to all your 'horsie friends' at that next BBQ!

PTR #275 Segment 2/5 - Porky Pet Volunteers Needed - Vanessa Rohlf

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, May 6, 2008

Did you know Australia is leading the world in research into pet obesity? It’s true but this groundbreaking research is looking at ways to help the parents of 'porky pets' to fix the problem and volunteers are needed to help the research team. Regular PTR listener and Monash University lecturer Vanessa Rohlf contacted us after last week's UK Report: Pets Predisposed To Obesity? (scroll to Seg5) to tell us of her work and put the word out she is looking for volunteers in the Melbourne area. So what’s involved in being a volunteer? A three month health promotion program. This program is designed to help owners feed and exercise their dogs so that they may achieve ideal body condition and live longer, healthier and happier lives. - Individuals who own a dog that they suspect may be overweight - Dogs must over 1 year of age - Owners must be over 18 What's required? A before and after short survey, plus a food and exercise log book. Attend one 90 minute training session. Topics include: 'how to determine body condition in dogs' 'the benefits of ideal body condition, exercise and nutrition' and problem solving of common issues associated with feeding and exercising the dog.' Note: Some participants may be allocated to a control group and will therefore not be required to attend training. Contact Vanessa directly on 0419 322451 or e-mail vanessa.rohlf@med.monash.edu.au

If we are to believe the experts exotic animals such as lizards snakes and frogs are now so popular as pets, that in a few years they’ll outnumber dogs and cats. Regular listeners will know that as far as Kaye’s concerned, her idea of a great reptile is one that’s a very long way away from her (watch 'Snake News' on www.youtube.com/PetTalkRadio to get the idea), especially after we went along to the biggest event on the reptile calendar - the 2008 Frog and Reptile Show at Castle Hill in Sydney. This incredibly professional and highly organised reptile expo (put on by no less than reptile guru Anthony Stimpson) saw thousands of people checking out everything from exotic snakes and lizards to frill neck friendly furniture! Plus a live 4 metre crocodile was happily basking in a large portable tank. So how’d he get there? We tracked down his owner and trainer - Nowra Wildlife Park’s Nicholas Schilko.

What would you do if your landlord said you couldn’t stay because you have a pet? Move?... to the pavement perhaps like this dog owner? Well unfortunately it’s no longer that simple. The shortage in the rental property market right across the country means that not only prices are going up but people with pets are being forced out. The end result is that dozens of pets are being surrendered to charity groups so that their human families can find a home. The crisis is worst in Queensland scores of families are being told to get rid of their pets or sleep on the street. We spoke with RSPCA Media spokesman Michael Beattie. As promised Dr Harry is back on Pet Talk Radio! this week and apart from the 'cuddling' issue we mentioned above, Dr Harry talks about some emerging diseases in our pets. Why is this happening? - Is it diet? Is it lifestyle? Make sure you listen to Segment 2 (scroll down) to hear what Dr Harry thinks. Also this week we go 'international' with a story out of the UK that may make us think twice about diet and exercise for our pets. Is it in their genes? We have a brand new UK correspondent to answer that question (scroll to segment 5) And the cooler weather is great for gardening... Tue, Apr 29, 2008

There are some scary statistics coming out of Health Departments at the moment. Apparently we’re all getting fatter in fact many are obese - but we’re in denial. You know the 'I’ve got big bones' or the old ‘ it’s in my family genes’ excuses? ... (more like I can’t get into these jeans!) ... Of course it’s pretty easy for humans to make excuses for OVER eating and UNDER exercising. But what about our pets? They’re stuck with how much we feed them or exercise them, so if we have a ‘fat fido’ or ‘chubby kitty cat’ then we’re to blame right?... Right! But there’s now proof some owners might be starting off behind the 8 ball because it seems certain breeds are pre-disposed to stacking on the kilos. We have a new international contributor to the show from the UK. Michelle Shanson who is in fact a veterinary surgeon is known by the catchy title of ‘The Veterinary Blonde’. Michelle is our new UK correspondent.

PTR #273 Segment 2/5 - Tail Docking Causes Aggression? - Dr Dr Jo Sillince

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 22, 2008

The AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) has been fighting against it for years – now it seems two Canadian scientists have shown that docking a dog's tail may make it more aggressive. What they discovered was that dogs will approach a dog with a docked tail more cautiously than they will a dog with a complete tail. They say that could make the dog with a docked tail more aggressive. University of Victoria (Canada) biologist Tom Reimchen and graduate student Steve Leaver say 'What type of teenager would you get if everyone approached him saying, I don't trust you? What type of personality would emerge from that? It could be the same in dogs.' Former President of the AVA Dr Jo Sillince comments on the findings.

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 22, 2008

Her father said "..but you can’t ride a horse!" which was true, but Marianne Du Toit was determined to follow her dream - that with only two horses for company, she would explore the Americas, travelling solo from Argentina to New York City over 21 months. Despite it being a journey of heartbreak, frustration, bureaucracy, loneliness, danger, and hunger, nothing stopped her from pursuing her objective. It’s not often we do book reviews - it’s even less often that we speak with the author - but 'Crying with Cockroaches' is no ordinary book and its author quite extraordinary. The trip helped raise awareness for the new Riding For The Disabled centre in Sligo, Northern Ireland.

It’s donkey day in Britain today! Well not officially, but we reckon if you were a donkey there’s cause for celebration because from now on they won’t have to carry anyone weighing over 50kg. Under a new national code of practice the hard-working UK donkeys are guaranteed at least one day a week off – plus they won’t have to show their foals to tourists. Because incredibly the prizes are worth up to $8 million in cash as well as up to 100 cars. Darn it how come beautiful camels are considered worth so much more than gorgeous girls? Meantime we're 'warming you up' for the experience with some 'Classic Dr Harry' One day we'll be brave enough (or mad enough ?) to devote a whole show to chooks. Dr Harry is crazy about them - in fact he's an acknowledged expert in exotic fowl as you will hear when describing a particular Japanese Chook in this segment - as usual it's full of fun Dr Harry style! For instance did you know that some chooks have been used to solve 'women's problems'? - no... neither did we, but it's true. This week: * Two listeners have a crook chook with a swollen foot, but their own vet can't find anything wrong! brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 15, 2008

Last week the CEO of the RSPCA Canberra Michael Linke contacted us regarding a comment made on a recent show by Dr Joanne Sillince with regard to the proposed ‘Sale Of Animals’ Bill (NSW). Mr Linke has told us the comments made regarding the proposed Bill ‘putting the RSPCA and other welfare groups out of business' were incorrect and has asked for a clarification and an apology. Pet Talk Radio! relies on its contributors to be fair and factual. But mistakes happen and we are always happy to try and put things right. In fact we thought this was a great opportunity for the pet industry's peak body – the PIAA (The Pet Industry Association of Australia) and the RSPCA (Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty To Animals)– representing animal welfare to speak openly together through our show. In this and the following segment we speak with Michael Linke – CEO of the RSPCA ACT and Dr Jo Sillince CEO of the PIAA iin our very first 'virtual conference. Dr Sillince starts the segment to clarify the comments above.

We’re pleased to be able to host this 'Virtual Conference' with two of the senior representatives from the pet industry and animal welfare talking about 'working together' in an attempt to solve a national problem. PLEASE NOTE: It is unfortunate our show has recently been accused of being biased one way or the other with regards to animal welfare Vs. the commercial side of the pet and animal industry and that we 'selectively choose' who comes on the show. Nothing could be further from the truth! Pet Talk Radio! has always given and continues to offer free air-time to any group from any sector of the pet and animal arena which can provide a new perspective on topics that will improve the lives of our companion animals. The show is national every week and your views will be heard by ten's of thousands of caring animal lovers.
Meantime - the second part of our 'Virtual Conference' continues with the CEO of RSPCA Canberra Michael Linke and the CEO of the Pet Industry Association of Australia talking about the issues surrounding dumped and abandoned animals and how both groups might work together for the future benefit of all animals.

PTR #270 Segment 2/5 - Cats Going Under The Radar - Plus: Why Do Dogs Bite?

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 1, 2008

People take dogs to their vet more than they take cats in fact, if Australia follows the US trend there’s a good chance horses are being seen by a vet more often than cats. Why is it happening? Are cats healthier now or are cat owners not doing the right thing? Perhaps cats simply hide their problems better than other animals. Veterinarian Dr Joanne Sillince and animal behaviourist Dr Joanne Righetti are feline fanatics and try to explain why our ‘cats are going under the radar’. PLUS: Why Do Dogs Bite? The 64 million dollar question but researchers now think anxiety or pain may be the reason behind uncharacteristic behaviour, such as bites. Pennsylvania University’s veterinary school looked at 111 dogs known to have bitten kids and found three-quarters of them showed signs of separation anxiety and loud noise phobias and half of them had serious medical conditions the owners didn’t know about. Most importantly the vast majority had never bitten before. Hear what our Pet Talk Radio! experts think of this study and will it help stop more kids and dogs clashing?

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Apr 1, 2008

The RSPCA, AWL (Animal Welfare League) and hundreds of small rescue groups, would have to close down if the 'Sale Of Animals In Pet Shops' (NSW) bill were to be enacted. These comments come from senior people within these organisations saying the sheer logistics and costs of transporting animals to and from vets (where it is proposed they be sold) would bankrupt them. Leading pet industry figures say Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has been poorly advised saying the very people this bill will affect were never even consulted. Dr Jo Sillince is the new CEO of the PIAA (Pet Industry Association) and gives Pet Talk Radio! listeners an update on this very 'confused' proposal.. PLUS: Ever watched your dog go a little 'clumsy'... Are four legs not enough sometimes?... It may look funny at first but these innocuous first clues may be the warning signs of something far more sinister - 'Wobblers Syndrome'. Most pet owners know what their pets are saying to them... Meow (I want food) or MEEOOOW! (I want food NOW)... Dogs of course can be just as pushy...Woof (I want to go for a walk) WOOOF WOOOF!! (I want to go out NOW!..) It’s easy to let our pets push us around… just give them what they want when they want – they soon learn that ‘speaking’ (or more often than not shouting at us in a loud voice) usually does the trick! Other actions include poking toys into our hands or nudging our hands to indicate they want to be patted or stroke.

PTR #269 Segment 5/5 - WildSide: Wild Waskally Wabbits! - Dr Joanne Righetti

brian@pettalkradio.com.au Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Mar 25, 2008

Domestic rabbits came to Australia with the first fleet but this and several other introductions did not see them become pests, except in Tasmania. It wasn't until Thomas Austin brought 24 wild rabbits from England in 1859 and released them that rabbits became a major problem. Wild European Rabbits are Australia's most serious animal pest. Damage by wild rabbits in Australia, including the annual cost of control and production losses, has been estimated at $600 million. They cause environmental damage which is often irreparable. The loss of vegetation from rabbit grazing threatens the survival of native birds, mammals, and insects that rely on plants for food and shelter. Wild rabbits compete with livestock for available pasture and their warrens contribute to soil erosion by removing vegetation and disturbing soil.

PTR #268 Segment 5/5 - WildSide: Why Animals Yawn! - Dr Joanne Righetti (rpt)

Brian@pettalkradio.com Author: PetTalkRadio.com.au
Tue, Mar 18, 2008

Next time you're in a boring meeting - try yawning and see how many other people start ... It's contagious!
And cats, dogs, even fish yawn which leads us to believe yawning is some form of communication.

Men yawn more than women, perhaps due to their larger muscle mass which requires more oxygen - but Brian thinks it's because women talk
more thus using up more of the available oxygen (I don't think so do you?)

A new study has in fact found that even chimps find yawning contagious - that is, if one does it, so will most of the others...

I'll bet you won't be able to stop yourself after listening to this very funny story! - Dr J.
Co-host and animal behaviourist Dr Joanne Righetti will return in 2 weeks time.
