The 404 992: Where we're getting to the bottom of this (podcast)
podcast@cnet.com (CNET.com)Author: CNET.com Mon, Feb 13, 2012
Did anyone else besides Jeff get teary-eyed yesterday watching Adele's performance at the Grammy Awards?
According to psychologist John Sloboda, there's a specific musical device called an "appoggiatura" that produces chills and a physiological reaction--in Jeff's case, a fist-clenching, hand-trembling faucet of man-tears.
On today's episode, we'll go around the table with the songs and movie scenes that pull at our heart strings, and why.

This week's failure to communicate, from Path, was hardly a unique event. Companies--especially fast-moving startups--screw up all the time. The issue is how they react to their errors. Can Path recover, as Facebook and Google have from their privacy flaps, or will this flub hurt the company over the long term?
And how can you prepare for your own inevitable, and public, failures, if you're running your own company?
I have two guests today well-versed in the art of failure and graceful recovery:

Hi BOL crew,
I think this sums up pinterest perfectly:
http://ilovecharts.tumblr.com/post/16875898793/people-who-use-pinterest-i-dont-want-to-start
I have a Pinterest account and am female, but I just don’t get it. If I want to share something I find online with my friends, I do it on Facebook or Twitter. If I want to save something for later, I use instapaper. And if I want to mark something as “”to buy”" I do it on Amazon. I just don’t see how Pinterest fits in.
Love the show! Nicole

Hi Buzz Crew,
First, I’m a lady, so maybe what I have to say is not what you’re looking for, but I really like Pinterest. I’m planning a wedding, so I’m pulling together images of flowers and hairstyles that I really like to help with inspiration. I also like to find recipes, pottery (I’m a potter, so I like to see what other people are doing with their work), and other creative ideas through pinterest. But I can see where it’s a niche market for people with two X chromosomes. I do find it overwhelming at times and have trouble with self-curation. We’ll see how it changes as it develops.
As my fiance (who introduced me to BOL) said when he discovered I was on the site, “Bitches love Pinterest.” It’s true. Gloria

Hey guys, I just caught your podcast for this week, where you talk
about bigger screen sizes. I must be in a minority, as I want my phone
screen as LARGE as possible, given that I just the screen (games, web

Voice mail about Facebook. Fit it in where ever
—–
Hi my name is josh from the Chicago area. in response to your voice mail about the callers phone not syncing with Facebook. You over looked the most valuable piece of evidence in that call. The fact he said he had a galaxy nexus.
Facebook blocking syncing is so last summer news. Right about the time google plus rolled out Facebook blocked syncing to the nexus class phones. When I bought my Nexus S 4G the Sprint employee reminded me. I can’t remember if it was exactly Facebook that did this or google.
The other Android phones can do it because whatever skin they run is actually doing the Facebook syncing not Android. So if your running a pure vanilla Android (Nexus class) you cannot sync because Facebook and google can’t get along in the social network arena. I knew this when I bought my Nexus S 4G and honestly don’t miss it seeing as I have over 400 friends on Facebook and that just clogs up my contact list and my phone would always blow up all day with Facebook notifications and run the battery down even faster.
Love the show

Hey guys! Love the show, been listening for a few months now. As a truck driver, it really helps the miles fly by.
I bought the Motorola Bionic in September and saw the data connectivity issues almost immediately. Heard there was going to be an OTA update that would fix this problem. Well, I got said OTA update, but airplane mode is still my most used app on my phone in order to reset my data connection. I randomly, and frequently lose my data connection (4G & 3G) out of nowhere. Is there an actual, working fix on the way that you guys know about?
Thanks for all the hard work and great entertainment.
Matt from Colorado Springs.

Simpsons fans in Los Angeles are meeting up today to kick off the Ultimate Fan Marathon Challenge in an effort to beat the world record for consecutive TV watching currently set at 86 hours, 6 minutes, and 41 seconds. On today's show, we'll discuss the challenge and propose one of our own that may be a little more difficult to achieve.
Lady Gaga is back in the news with the emergence of a new social media site for her fans called LittleMonsters.com. It's the first site that runs under Backplane, a portal for interest groups backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt that combines elements of Reddit, Pinterest, and Google+, but some critics argue that the site is a ripoff.

Samsung's fabled Retuna Deesplay has made its way to our e-mail inbox!

Today's episode blew our minds. And not just because it was Humiliation Day.
First Emily embarrassed herself by revealing her hidden talents; then she discovered her old lady cowboy voice; then Karyne did a "face mic," which is basically a face palm but using a mic; and then Amazon killed us with the possibility of opening brick-and-mortar stores to sell (drum roll, please): BOOKS! Say what?
Best Buy put out a survey starring the iTV this week, only to tell us later that the survey was "hypothetical." You know what else is hypothetical, Best Buy? You not carrying the iTV, no matter how big it is and how much it costs.
Also on today's show, the next iPod Nano might be used as the stupidest spy camera in the world, we give the Duck Timer for a Windows Phone 8's possible specs, and Samsung is releasing so many products a minute, we just can't keep up.
Don't miss the special video-within-a-video for Humiliation Day!

Ep. 209: Windows Phone 8 details leak, HTC Sense is too weak
This week's podcast is my first time ever hosting, so please excuse all the awkwardness as I get my sea legs going.
To compensate, I offer you a lively discussion about the new details surrounding Windows Phone 8. So far, there's word of a multicore processor in the works, as well as integration with the Windows 8 desktop and tablet operating system.
We also debate the merits of HTC's Sense skin. Some of us think it's just fine and dandy (we still get a kick out of that retro clock on the phones), but others believe it's time for a change. Especially when compared to Android's beautiful Ice Cream Sandwich OS.
And lastly, we offer some recent news headlines in the mobile industry, including purchasing details for the Samsung Galaxy S III (it's coming in May), and the Galaxy Note (it's available for preorder).

Reporters' Roundtable: What's Facebook going to do with that money?

Facebook filed to go public this week and the entire tech world turned its attention to the filing document, the S-1. It revealed some impressive numbers: 845 million monthly users on Facebook, about half of them on mobile devices.
It also showed that Zynga accounted for 12 percent of Facebook's revenue.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a letter embedded in the S-1, also took pains to tell potential investors that Facebook would try to maintain its "hacker culture," as well as its focus on connecting people to each other, as opposed to connecting shareholders just to revenue.
There's a lot to unpack in the Facebook filing, and we have two great guests to help us walk through it:
- Josh Constine, a writer at TechCrunch and fomerly the lead writer of Inside Facebook, and...
- Shervin Pishevar, a venture capitalist in Menlo Ventures and an entrepreneur
Bonus: Shervin was an early investor in Klout, so I asked him some questions on that product, after the main show. The video is embedded at the end of this post.

We eventually get back to the news, and today's rundown includes the story of a guy who found a 32GB iPad 2 in his local Goodwill store for $65, a New York adult store delivering toys within an hour on bikes, Kim Dotcom's transformation into Dr. Evil, and Facebook testing a new photo viewer!

EMAILS:
Hey guys,
Regarding last week’s discussion about Foxconn and other Apple factories working conditions. The one thing that I don’t hear anybody saying is that Foxconn is actually one of the better factories to work at in China.
A coworker of mine who has been to several big manufacturing plants in China/Asia (including Foxconn) says that there are dozens if not hundreds of plants from big clothing and electronics manufacturers who do not provide any oversight or supervision in the way that Apple does.
Because of all the press surrounding Foxconn, Apple is working to improve things by placing supervisors in the factories and pressuring change. Clearly, Apple can and should do more (being the biggest player in the area) but they are also taking all the heat in the press so that these other companies have no motivation to improve conditions because they are ignored by the media.
Just wanted to point that out, I think it would be great if Apple and Foxconn completely reformed their practices, but the fact is that it’s a problem with the whole system and not just one company. Jesse Potter”

Hey Buzz Crew,
I’ve heard discussion about Google’s new privacy policy all over the place, generally balanced but with discernible “”anti”" vibes. Well, just now, Facebook showed me an ad for a Commander Shepard Hoodie! That is awesome! Somebody sold them the right information! I wouldn’t mind if Google propositioned cool goods like that to me. Just saying.
You guys are awesome! Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Mark from PA

Hey Buzz Crew,
Like everyone else I received Google’s updated privacy policy and it
is indeed shorter and much easier to read. I have edited and
re-phrased it to make it even shorter and easier to read:
We are Google. You will be assimilated. Your biological and
technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is
futile.
Love the Show,

When interviewing somebody about their website, can you PLEASE spell the website. I *listen* to the show in the car. I was totally interested in the interview about givit.com, but became frustrated because I thought you were saying getit.com, and I couldn’t find the stupid site using my smartphone. Finally found its spelling in the show notes, but, man, what a hassle. Same thing for that website jean simmons was promoting. Or the dating site based on your location. And I could go on and on. Atlasers Crew,
I was just wondering, why do some apps let you save them to the SD card, and others don’t give you the option. I understand there are some performance issues installing an app to the SD card, but as someone with a MyTouch 3G Slide, my memory is at a premium and installing to SD often decides if I can use an app. I know there are apps that can force install apps to SD if I root, but the MT3GS is notorious for being tricky to root and my technical prowess is lacking. Just was wondering.

I am new to android and also email and tweeting. Not good at either. But I watch the show and enjoy it. I need help! I have an HTC thunderbolt and it is awful. I have had three one in June a second in October and a third in November. Each one the software was awful. It failed in each one ,phone calls froze,I could not listen to music without being disconnected or watch video podcasts, and to download was a nightmare. The customer reps were great. But the phone is still crappy. My contract is up at the end of the year, please , any suggestions would be appreciated. My carrier is Verizon are there any phones that I should watch for. Thanks Guys! – Deboarah

Hi guys,
I have a question.
A few weeks ago I was trying to view some some NFL videos on my new Nexus (which I love, btw). As you may know, the mobile NFL app didn’t work on the Nexus at launch, so i went to the desktop site and tried to watch the Flash videos, with very mixed (mostly bad) results. Aside from an advertisement, I was never able to see any videos. I’m sure these bugs will be worked out eventually, so i’m not too worried about that.
The surprising thing was that I went to the site on my wife’s ipad expecting to see an empty frame where the video should be but instead the video was actually there. (most likely encoded in html5, i’m assuming) I’ve noticed this on a few other sites, like engadget for example. What gives?
Is there some kind of user agent trickery going on here? Are android users being forced to watch flash videos even when an html5 video is available? Flash is awesome when its the only option, but if it isnt the only option do we not have a choice? And finally, is there something android users can do to request the html5 video. I tried switching the Dolphin browser user agent to ‘ipad’ but i was still told to download flash.
—–
I am a proponent of flash on mobile but I, and probably most users, would prefer the html5 video if its actually available, especially on a slow connection.
What i’m trying to find out is whats going on here. As far as I know, the android browser handles html5 video just fine. But, even after uninstalling flash and going back to the site, i wasn’t presented with a video. I was told I needed to download flash.
thanks in advance for the info,
@Szientific

Rumor Has It, Ep. 18: No, Samsung, we don't need a bigger Galaxy Tab (podcast)

"If the wind changes, you'll be stuck like that!" (When the live stream freezes, we learn the expressions our faces are apparently capable of making.)

To celebrate Mark Zuckerberg maybe possibly loosening his death grip on Facebook, Karyne and I give you a little Econ 101 lesson.
Kidding! No we don't. All I learned in Econ 101 was that there is apparently no such thing as a free lunch (then what was that pizza I just found abandoned in the kitchen and ate, hmm?) and that the more scarce a thing is, the more money it will cost.
But scarcity might explain why unvested stocks of Facebook have been some of the highest valued and most traded on SecondMarket--a market to trade stocks in private companies--until Zuck stopped letting Facebook be traded there this week, ostensibly because a proper IPO is about to be filed.
Yadda, yadda, math, money, numbers! All I want to know about Facebook going public is this: if suddenly I can own a bit of the company, can I have a say in rolling back the wretched Timeline? Ugh! Let's all buy stock and then rise up and demand the old interface back!
Other stuff we bet on this week: whether the new Xbox will drop in October of 2013; Samsung will bore us with an unnecessarily enormous new tablet at Mobile World Congress; and Nintendo will embarrass itself by changing the name of the Wii U to something much, much worse.
Oh, also--almost forgot--the iPhone 5 could be coming this summer, and it may be waterproof. No biggie.

The saddest part of the rumor about celebrities getting paid thousands of dollars to send corporate-sponsored Tweets is that it's true.
It started with Internship.com paying Charlie Sheen $50,000 to solicit "Tiger Blood" interns, and today we're exploring the number of ways celebrities make money on the side.
We'll also talk about presidential campaigns embracing modern technology, starting with Romney's crew using Square hardware to grab donations and votes.
We'll also pick at the reasons why Obama and Google strategically ignored the most-voted question from yesterday's YouTube campaign q&a. Plenty of time to talk about late-night snacks, but what about the 4,500 users who have legitimate health concerns?
Finally, we'll debunk the "Mozart Effect"--that listening to classical music causes a temporary increase in IQ.
Doctors have found that nearly any kind of music tends to increase dopamine levels of the brain that are generally thought to improve cognition, so a solid dose of Lady Gaga can have the same cerebral effects as a Vivaldi concerto.

Reporters' Roundtable: Apple's China problem
podcast@cnet.com (CNET.com)Author: CNET.com Fri, Jan 27, 2012
Ep. 108: Apple's China problem
Apple is the most valuable U.S. company there is, and the most powerful and influential consumer electronics company by far. It is obscenely profitable.
This amazing success is built on the backs of hundreds of thousands of factory workers, almost all of them in China, who assemble iPhones, and other products from other vendors, in giant, science-fiction-scale plants that never stop.
These plants take their toll. On workers in China. And on jobs here in the United states.
Two recent pieces of outstanding journalism highlight the issues. First, there's a series developing in The New York Times, co-authored by Charles Duhigg, that kicked off in the Sunday edition: "How the U.S. Lost Out on iPhone Work." A follow-on piece, "In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad," ran Wednesday.
Second, a "This American Life" episode, "Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory," has reignited interest in monologuist Mike Daisey's report of his trip to visit the birthplace of his iPhone, the Foxconn plant in China.
Today we have both Charles Duhigg and Mike Daisey on the Roundtable, and we're going to talk about Apple's muscle, how it works with Chinese manufacturing companies, if there's any chance that manufacturing could return to the U.S. And if it would be a good thing if it did.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has responded to the emerging reports on working conditions at Apple's device manufacturers. I discussed this response with Duhigg in a separate interview, which is at the end of this Roundtable (at the 24-minute mark, if you want to go straight there).

Discussion points:
Why are iPhones and iPads (and Android phones and HP laptops...etc.) manufactured in China?
Products are global. Why are we talking about where they are manufactured?
What's more important: Where things are made, or how workers are treated?
Let's talk about the factories that make these devices.
Have working conditions improved since stories about them started to appear, more than a year ago?
What are Apple's policies? Can you compare to other companies?
Can Apple innovate in this areas?
How would the plants be different if they were in the U.S.? More automated?
Don't we have supply chain expertise here? If Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and BMW can bring manufacturing to the U.S., why can't Apple?
Do consumers care? What would they pay for "exploitation-free" gadgets?
Discussion with Charles Duhigg about the new Tim Cook memo on working conditions.
More from our guests:
Charles Duhigg has a new book coming out in a month called "The Power of Habit." It's available for preorder on Amazon.
Mike Daisey is re-opening "The Agony and the Ecstacy of Steve Jobs," with updates based on the New York Times series. It will be at the Public Theater in New York for five more weeks, starting January 31.

As the case for Web censorship moves forward, Twitter announced today that it'll soon block tweets on a countrywide basis when they violate local restrictions, so we can look forward to our government making it illegal for Nickelback to fight back against their Twitter haters.
We're surprised that some Google users are upset about the company's new "streamlined" privacy policies--don't they know that Google knows more about you than your own mother?
If you don't believe it, you can see exactly who Google thinks you are on its Ads Preferences page, or download the Google Advertising Cookie Opt-out Plugin to permanently get rid of them.
An issue with Nintendo's proposed nomenclature change for the Wii U goes down in the second half of today's episode, but we'll also talk about the company's announcement about NFC chips coming to the next console and how they will soon blend objects in real life with those on your television screens.
Finally, be sure to check into the second half of the show as well if you've been wondering about 4K televisions, aka the "next big thing in home theater." 4K TVs are supposed to display four times more resolution than today's current HDTVs, but CNET's own Ty Pendlebury tells us that the human eye is physically unable to view extra detail beyond 1080p.
In fact, most people can't even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p from 10 feet away. Bottom line is that 4K is just a marketing buzzword, because, well, 4K is stupid.

Hey Buzz Crew,
In episode #1577 you guys talked about the new iTunes U and what that could mean for schools that want to adopt this technology. My high school in Ohio has been using iPads as digital workbooks since the start of the 2010-11 school year, so I thought I should share a few details about how the system was implemented. My high school is a private catholic school, so I understand that it may not be representative of how public schools could implement it, but I figure the information will be useful nonetheless. As part of the cost of attendance, a $200 fee was added as a “”rental fee”" for use of the ipad for a year. Each year a student attends the school they pay the fee, and get to keep the iPad upon graduation. Students can even keep the iPad on summer breaks and use it however they choose. It’s not a perfect system, since if a student starts at the school as a freshman, the kid is paying $300 extra dollars than paying for the iPad outright, but the $200 annual fee does cover cost of the workbooks apps, and also what amounts to an insurance policy if the student breaks the thing. The system has worked really well here, as the interactive features that the workbooks provide are a significant upgrade over the standard workbook. In regards to your concerns about how tech-savvy some of the teaching staff could be, its actually worked out nicely here, as the students seem eager to aid the staff in becoming tech literate, which in turn has had a positive effect on the relationship between the teachers and students.Like I said, it’s not a perfect system, but its worked out really well here and the revamped iTunes U should only aid that.

The same people who did the Eagle Cam last year are doing the same with a momma bear, and her cub. They placed a camera inside a bear den in Minnesota. You can watch live video of the bears, or watch video recorded earlier of the bear cubs birth.
“”Observers report the mother and child communicate using grunts, groans, and squeals.”"

Maybe the bear should get a Twitter account. I mean if a Senator who speaks in incomprehensible phrases can get 400,000 followers, a bear should be able to get at least a few thousand.

I just found the online equivalent of the girl who doesn’t want you to ask her out so she injects a story about her boyfriend (whether she has one or not) into conversations as soon as she meets you.
I’ve been chatting with a woman at work — trying to let her get to know me. I mentioned some photos I have on Facebook, and she said send me the link. But apparently I’m only in the friend zone. She friended me with a Facebook profile she uses for work contacts only. I realized she had another profile for “”real”" friends when Facebook’s ‘people you may know’ feature busted her by showing me her real profile.
Oh well. Moving on.

The 404 980: Where it breaks my heart to see her eat those nuggets (podcast)
podcast@cnet.com (CNET.com)Author: CNET.com Thu, Jan 26, 2012
McDonald's posted impressive quarterly earnings two days ago, but a scoop from the UK Sun newspaper today exposes the astonishing truth behind McDonald's Chicken McNuggets: you shouldn't eat them everyday for 15 years straight.
The show title today is ripped from a quote from the mother of 17-year-old UK factory worker Stacey Irvine, who's eaten nothing but McDonald's Chicken McNuggets since she was 2 years old. Shockingly, doctors maintain that her diet may have been a factor in her sudden anemia and swollen tongue veins that caused her to collapse yesterday.
Speaking of things getting ripped off, we'll also talk about the Australian Transport Minister that just got caught copying Michael Douglas' speech from the movie "The American President," and the NFL installing computers on the sidelines of the Pro Bowl for players to tweet fans during the game!

Greetings Guys from De Nederlands
I love the show and listen to it every week. The segment in your last broadcast about user interphase guidelines really caught my attentions. I agree with you about the inconsistency of user interphases with Android apps. In comparison to iOS, it is bloody annoying. I applaud Google for publishing guidelines but I don’t think it goes far enough. I think a simple solution would be for Google to provide a section in the Market for apps delelopers that have followed the guidelines. They should then endorse the product with something like a Google Certificate of Interphase Compliance. The first thing you should see when you open Market is the Google compliant apps. Still keep Market open to developers who wish to use their own interphases. you just have to troll for them. I think that this would please everyone without treading on anyone’s toes and encourage developers to keep to the guidelines. I believe that this would be a cheap and easy solution to one of the most irritating aspects of Android. I use the Samsung Galaxy S Plus and I love the thing. Android is just a great system and is only going to get bigger and better.
Thanks a bunch guys for a great show, It is something I look forward to each week.
Groetjes

I have an EVO 3D and I’ve never had any battery problems. Unless its in roaming or a bad app kicks in, its never been a problem. All day power, even with games playing. I know you guys like to rip in the phone because you’re 3D Haters, but even without 3D, its a sweet and fast phone. – Max Title: The Evo is 4G: Title says is all. You guys need to learn more about the EVO 3D. It still is the best phone in Sprint, and likely will be until those new Quad core NVIDIA phones come out. (Please tell me you guys know about those. You seem to know little about Android) :\

Hello Android Atlas I am Ander and I have an Xperia Play. I have been considering rooting it but I fear for my warranty going void since I have already need to use it in the past. Resnetly I discovered this rooting software called Gingerbreak that is supposed to be able to root your phone without voiding your warranty. I this true? And is Gingerbreak a safe and good way to root your phone?
P.S. Keep up the good work. – Ander

Hello Justin and Antuan,
I will start by saying I love the show, even if at times it gives me serious tech envy. I am writing to ask your opinions about the upcoming Motorola Droid Razr Maxx versus the Galaxy Nexus with an extended battery. I am planning on getting a phone within the next five months or so and was considering getting the Nexus when it came out on Sprint, but decided to stay with Verizon for the 4G LTE that is now in my area. I like to think of myself as a technophile and I cringe at the idea of either no removable storage or a non-removable battery, but these seem like the only two good, high end Android phones out right now. What would you suggest I spend my hard earned cash on, the Maxx, the Nexus, or another device?
Thank you and keep up the awesome show. – Raymond

Jeff almost didn't make it out of court this morning to be on the show, but he squirms out of Lady Justice's grasp just in time to join us, maybe with a few minutes in between to update his Facebook.
We'll talk today about Facebook's Timeline feature coming to a profile near you (whether you like it or not), last night's tech-heavy State of the Union Address, and who's responsible for the state of John Kerry's face.
Obama's made lots of promises in his speech this year, not the least of which is a pledge to give more technology training to Americans looking to expand their workforce skills.
He also mentioned an end to digital piracy and will host a Google+ video hangout on January 30 with questions accepted through the White House YouTube channel.
Finally, we play a couple voice mails from listeners whose opinions on the show range from helpful criticism to unflappable adoration to venomous hatred.
We must be doing something right!
