Jaron Lanier Talk on You Are Not a Gadget

In this improvised talk at the Harvard Book Store, computer scientist Jaron Lanier discusses some of the ideas in his first book You Are Not a Gadget: Being Human in an Age of Technology. He admits that in the early days of the Internet he was a technology utopian who preached the amazing potential of the World Wide Web. But as a scientist he was always committed to empirical data of what the outcomes of the Internet were providing. Throughout the talk he criticizes big tech companies like Google and Facebook that are turning us into more machines than humans, and that are wreaking havoc in our social lives and our financial markets. While the monopolistic dominance of these big tech companies can seem overwhelming, Lanier still feels there is hope to change the architecture of the Internet to empower individuals both creatively and financially. Delivered back in 2010, Lanier's warnings about the Internet seem quite prescient.
