Rick Steves' Venice: St. Mark's Basilica Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Tue, Mar 11, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually in St. Mark's Basilica! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: While entering St. Mark's Basilica is free, I'd pay for each of its three separate admissions inside: the Treasury (€2), Golden Altarpiece (€2), and San Marco Museum (€3, enter museum from atrium either before or after you tour the church). The San Marco Museum is the one most worth its entry fee. To enter the church, modest dress is required even of kids (no shorts or bare shoulders). People who ignore the dress code hold up the line while they plead fruitlessly with the dress-code police. The church (including the Treasury and Golden Altarpiece) is open Mon–Sat 9:45–17:00 (until 16:30 off-season), Sun 14:00–16:00. The San Marco Museum is open Mon–Sat 9:45–16:30, Sun 9:45–16:00. To enjoy the gilded, mosaic-covered church in all its medieval glory, see it when it's lit up (usually Mon–Sat 11:30–12:30). There's almost always a long line to get into St. Mark's. To deal with the relentless crowds, the church interior is roped off. You just have to shuffle through on a one-way system. While small purses are allowed inside the church, larger bags and backpacks are not. Check them for free at the nearby Ateneo San Basso, a former church (open roughly Mon–Sat 9:30–17:30, Sun 14:00–16:30; head to the left of basilica, down narrow Calle San Basso, 30 yards to the second door on your right). Those with a bag to check actually get to skip the line. Here's how it works: Drop by Ateneo San Basso. Leave your bag (for up to one hour) and pick up the claim tag. Two people per tag are allowed to go to the basilica's gatekeeper, present the tag, and scoot directly in, ahead of the line. After touring the church, come back and pick up your bag. Note: St. Mark's Basilica is the most dangerous place in Venice for pickpocketing - inside, it's always a crowded jostle. Rick Steves' Venice: St. Mark's Square Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Mar 5, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually in St. Mark's Square! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: There is no admission fee for St. Mark's Square. If you want to see the view from the top of the bell tower, it'll cost you €6 (daily July–Aug 9:00–21:00, Sept–June 9:00–19:00), and you'll need to reserve a visit in advance and take a tour. A guide takes you to close-ups of the clock's innards and out to a terrace with views of the square. English tours run Mon-Wed in the morning, and Thu-Sun in the afternoon. You can reserve in person at the Correr Museum, or call 041-520-9070, or book online at www.museiciviciveneziani.it. Rick Steves' Venice: Grand Canal Cruise Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 29, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually in Venice! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: "Admission" to the Grand Canal costs €6 for a 60-minute vaporetto ticket. You'll enjoy the best light and the fewest crowds by riding late in the day. Sunset bathes the buildings in gold. After dark, chandeliers light up building interiors. "Rush hour" in the direction of this tour (heading toward San Marco) is morning, when local workers and tourists staying on the mainland commute into town. In the evening, the crowds head home and you'll find boats going toward San Marco relatively empty. Boats run every 10 minutes. When catching your boat, confirm that you're on a "San Marco via Rialto" boat (some boats finish at the Rialto Bridge, others take a non-scenic outside route). The conductor announces "Solo Rialto!" for boats going only as far as Rialto. Wherever and whenever you board, make a bee-line for the front, as that's where tourists generally go first. You can break the tour by hopping on and off at various sights you'll pass along the way - but remember, your vaporetto ticket is good for only 60 minutes. These are all worth considering as hop-off spots: San Marcuola (near the Jewish Ghetto), Mercato Rialto (for a look at the market and a walk across the famous bridge), Ca' Rezzonico (for its Museum of 18th-Century Venice), Accademia (for the Accademia Gallery and the nearby Guggenheim Collection), and Salute (to check out the huge and interesting La Salute church). Rick Steves' Venice: Frari Church Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 26, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Frari Church! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Admission to the Frari Church costs €2.50, and modest dress is recommended. The church is open Mon–Sat 10:00–18:00, Sun 13:00–18:00 (closed Sun in Aug), last entry 15 min before closing, no visits during services. Tel. 041-272-8618. You'll find the church on the Campo dei Frari, near the San Tomà vaporetto and traghetto stops. For efficient sightseeing, combine your visit with the Scuola San Rocco, located just behind the Frari Church. The church often hosts evening concerts (€15, tickets sold at the church; for concert details, look for fliers, call 041-272-8611, or check www.basilicadeifrari.it). Rick Steves' Florence: Uffizi Gallery Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 20, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Uffizi! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Admission to the Uffizi costs €9.50, plus €3 fee for the optional but highly recommended reservation. If you've reserved tickets, you'll need to bring cash to pick them up. The Uffizi is open Tue–Sun 8:15–18:50, last entry 45 min before closing, closed Mon. As only 600 are allowed into the museum at a time, there are infamously long lines to get in. Avoid the three-hour peak-season wait by getting a reservation. Reserved spots can fill up more than a month in advance, especially for Sat, Sun, and Tue. If you plan to book ahead, you have several options for beating the line. The easiest solution: When you book your hotel room, ask your hotelier to get you an Uffizi reservation. Most hotels offer this service, either for free or for a €3–5 fee. You can also reserve a time by phone on your own; it's a simple process, but it can be difficult to get through to the often busy reservation line. Even if you get through, you may be disconnected while on hold. Try again. And again. Dial 055-294-883 during office hours (Mon–Fri 8:30–18:30, Sat 8:30–12:30, closed Sun). With the help of an English-speaking operator, you'll get an entry slot (15-min window) and a six-digit confirmation number. After you have your reservation (or voucher), go to the Uffizi 10 minutes before your appointed time. You'll notice that there are several entrances. Walk briskly across the courtyard from the 200-yard-long ticket-buying line--pondering the IQ of this gang--to the reserved-ticket desk at door #3 (labeled Picking Up Service). Give your reservation number or voucher, pay (cash only), and cross the courtyard again to door #1 (close to the Palazzo Vecchio; one line for groups, one for individuals). Rick Steves' Florence: Accademia and Michelangelo's David Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 15, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Accademia! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Admission to the Accademia to see Michelangelo's David costs €6.50 (plus €3 fee for recommended reservation). It's open Tue–Sun 8:15–18:50, closed Mon (last entry 30 min before closing). The museum is most crowded on Sun, Tue, and right when it opens. Tel. 055-238-8609. While David and the Prisoners can be seen in 30 minutes, allow an hour if you wish to linger and explore other parts of the museum. Rick Steves' Florence: Renaissance Walk Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 11, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually in Florence! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Here are some sightseeing specifics for places along this route: The Duomo (Cathedral) is free, open Mon–Wed and Fri–Sat 10:00–17:00 (except first Sat of month 10:00–15:30), Thu 10:00–16:00, Sun 13:30–16:45. Tel. 055-230-2885. Climbing the dome costs €6 (Mon–Fri 8:30–19:00, Sat 8:30–17:40 except first Sat of month 8:30–16:00, closed Sun; last entry 40 minutes before closing; enter from outside church on south side, arrive by 8:30 or drop by very late to avoid a long wait in line). Giotto's Tower costs €6, open daily 8:30–19:30, last entry 40 min before closing. The Baptistry costs €3, and is open Mon–Sat 12:15–19:00, Sun 8:30–14:00, last entry 30 min before closing. The famous bronze doors are on the outside so they're always "open" (viewable) and free. The original panels are in the Duomo Museum. Admission to the Orsanmichele Church is free, Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00, closed Mon. Niche sculptures are always viewable from the outside. The church hosts evening concerts; tickets are sold on the day of the concert from the door facing Via dei Calzaiuoli. You'll also find plenty of cafes, self-service cafeterias, bars, and gelato shops along the route. Excerpted from "Rick Steves' Florence 2008" © 2007 Avalon Travel Publishing, all rights reserved. Rick Steves' Rome: Sistine Chapel Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 6, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Sistine Chapel! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Admission to the Vatican Museum, which includes the Sistine Chapel, costs €13; on the last Sun of each month, it's free (and packed). Modest dress (no short shorts or bare shoulders) is required. While this dress code may not be strictly enforced here, it is at St. Peter's Basilica. Good news: The Vatican Museum recently extended its hours (after my 2008 guidebooks went to press). The museum is now open Monday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last ticket sold at 4:00 p.m.); closed on Sunday except for the last Sunday of the month, when it's free and open 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (last ticket sold at 12:30 p.m.). The opening hours can change year-to-year, and the museum closes completely on many religious holidays, so confirm in advance (see the current calendar at mv.vatican.va). Note: The Sistine Chapel closes before the museum. Individual rooms may close at odd hours, especially after 1:00 p.m. TV screens inside the entrance list closures. The Vatican Museum is closed on many holidays (mainly religious ones) including, for 2008: Jan 1 (New Year's), Jan 6 (Epiphany), Feb 11 (Vatican City established), March 19 (St. Joseph), March 23-24 (Easter Sunday and Monday), May 1 (Labor Day and Ascension Thursday), May 22 (Corpus Christi), June 29 (Saints Peter and Paul), Aug 15 plus either Aug 14 or 16 - it varies year to year (Assumption of the Virgin), Nov 1 (All Saints' Day), Dec 8 (Immaculate Conception), and Dec 25–26 (Christmas). Other holidays and changes in opening hours may pop up - check the hours and 2008 calendar at www.vatican.va. The museum is generally hot and crowded. The most crowded days are Saturday, the last Sunday of the month, Monday, rainy days, and any day before or after a holiday closure. Afternoons or Wednesday mornings before 11:00 are best. Most mornings, the line to get in stretches around the block. If you arrive at 9:00 in the morning, be sure to line up against the Vatican City wall (to the left of the entrance); the other line is for guided tours. Rick Steves' Rome: Colosseum Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Fri, Feb 1, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Colosseum! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Colosseum admission costs €11 (includes the nearby Palatine Hill and special exhibits; ticket valid all day, or -- if purchased after 13:30 -- for 24 hours). The Colosseum is open daily from 9:00 until one hour before sunset: April-Aug until 19:00, Sept until 18:30, Oct until 18:00, Nov-Feb until 16:00, March until 16:30. Information tel. 06-3996-7700. The lines in front of the Colosseum are for buying tickets and for security checks -- not for actually entering the sight. While everyone has to wait in the security line, once you're through that -- if you have your ticket already -- stay to the left (which is the passage for groups), muscle your way past the ticket-buying crowd, and go directly to the turnstile, which never has a line. You can often save lots of time if you buy your ticket at either of the two rarely crowded Palatine Hill entrances near the Colosseum. The (slightly) closer one is about 200 yards past the Arch of Constantine on Via di San Gregorio (facing Forum entry, with Colosseum at your back, go left down the street). The other is inside the Forum, near the Arch of Titus. The ticket includes entry to both the Colosseum and Palatine Hill. You can also reserve ahead online, choosing a specific entrance time and paying a €5 booking fee (try www.tickitaly.com). But, considering how easy it is to get a ticket at the Palatine Hill entrance, I wouldn't bother with this option. Rick Steves' Rome: Roman Forum Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Tue, Jan 29, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at the Forum! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Forum admission is free (€11 charge to visit Palatine Hill, above the Forum). The Forum is open daily 8:30–19:00, until 17:00 in winter; last entry 1 hour before closing. The ancient paving at the Forum is uneven, so wear sturdy shoes. I carry a water bottle and refill it at the Forum's public drinking fountains. Guided tours in English (€3.50) depart from the Arch of Titus kiosk nearly hourly in summer (in winter, once daily around 12:15). Rick Steves' Rome: St. Peter's Basilica Audio Tour

Author: Rick Steves
Wed, Jan 23, 2008

This audio tour works best if you're actually at St. Peter's Basilica! Don't forget to download the companion PDF map for this tour. Sightseeing nitty gritty: Basilica admission is free (€6 to climb the dome). No shorts or bare shoulders (applies to men, women, and children), and no miniskirts. This dress code is strictly enforced. Open daily April–Sept 7:00–19:00, Oct–March 7:00–18:00. Mass is held daily (Mon–Sat at 8:30, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 17:00; Sun and holidays at 9:00, 10:30, 11:30, 12:10, 13:00, 16:00, and 17:30; confirm schedule locally). The church closes on Wednesday mornings during papal audiences. The best time to visit the church is early or late. 17:00 is ideal, when the church is fairly empty, sunbeams can work their magic, and the late-afternoon Mass fills the place with spiritual music.
